Hi Folks,
Could someone please tell me the years that the 1693 engine was built? I'm planning a KW restoration and would like to power it with a 1693. Thanks.

In the Cat SNID book it shows the 1693 65B came out in 1964 and the 3406 92U that replaced it came out in 1973 so that,s as near as I can tell you.I have worked on and rebuilt lots of them at the dealer I worked for and they were a tough old engine and powerful. The high HP was rated at 425 HP that were aftercooled but I tested one that was set up highter and it put out 525 HP but I shut it down at that on the dyno.and the owner wanted it left at that as he hauled out west up the big mountains and said he needed the power. It had 880,000 miles on it when I majored it as it throwed a bearing and had to come out. He was a local guy so I did the service on it from new when he got it but I did do some in frame work on it before but that is a lot of miles before a major job. They weren,t quite as good on fuel as the 3406s were but were one tough engine. The were based on the Cat D343 engine but had some aluminum parts and housings to cut down on weight.

Thanks SJ, I figured you would know. I'm working on an early 70's KW so this will be a good match. It has a 318 in it now and as much as I like those two strokes, it just wouldn't be right for a true Cat hauler.
