I own an old cat D8 14A which is still working somehow.
Last summer I had to replace the fuel pumps. I tried to find the correspondance between old parts num. but ew parts were absolutely not compatible.

After few weeks I found similar pumps (body and diameter of interior cylinder that make the fuel into pressure to the injection nozzle). The only difference is the lenght of such cylinder.
The difference is about 3 mm (70 mm instead of the 67mm).

I doubt it can alterate the injection timing, but I don't know if there is any way of registering the injection.

Thanks for all suggestions.

hello Asterix, yes the lifters are out of spec ,it will be pumping fuel early into the cylinders ,
the specs for fuel injector fuel pump are -1.728'' -1.730''
fuel pump plunger length - 2.6575'' -2.6577''
permissable wear 0.005''

i am not sure if you will get the 3mm that you need ,some else will know better than me.

you will need to reset the lifter settings .

you will need a set of micrometer and a set of pump setting tools .

i will post the pages you need to reset them .bruce oz

hello ,the rack setting manuals says that there may be a torque spring(4h7122) ,.022'' thick and one spacer (8f9784),.117'' thick used on some models .

these removed will give it the normal rack setting of 1.729''

make sure these are still not in the pump housing ? ,bruce oz

It sounds like the pumps you found are the same bore, but not the same stroke, instead they are 3mm longer.

I believe if the longer pumps are matched sets (plunger and cylinder), they may work. Are the pumps listed in the manufacturer's catalog to fit the D8 tractor? Part numbers might not be same as number in D8 book or old pumps, but should cross over if they are usable.

What part number are the long pumps? Who is manufacturer? Some companies like FP Diesel use CAT part numbers on their parts.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The dozer was using pumps nmber 4H5238, 8M3137. Cat says they arte now equivalento to the 8M3280. But it is not true because of the thin diameter of the new part.

The pumps I found were 1P3409 litlle longer...

Bruce, do you have the specifications forthe distance between lifter and the case (distance "A" in the 2nd page sent 2nd row) so that I can adjust it by subtacting the lenght excess ?

I already have the new pump, so I have to fix up the settings

Thanks

Some interchange info:

Original pumps:
4H5238, 7F6042, 8F2590 are all 10mm pumps for the 5-3/4 in. bore engine.
The current replacement is an 8M3137 (still available)

The 1P3409 is replaced by a 8M2899 (different pump)

8M3280 is listed as the replacement for 8M3137, 7F6042, 4H5239, 8M3277 and 8F259.

I'd recommend you get the 8M3137 pumps and not fool around trying to adapt the wrong parts.

Thanks Old Magnet, but I found that 8M3137 is replaced by 8M3280 (www.disa.it). This was the beginning of the troubles.......
