Hello Friends,
I have located a Cat 12E grader with a 38E engine and is in poor condition but has possibilities.
The SN is 38E 120. So what year would it be ?
How difficult finding parts for this machine in Oz or anywhere for that matter. I guess the diesel was installed on other Cat machines too.
The casing around the injector rack is smashed and needs replacing among many other things. But I think it's worth saving.
Regards and thanks,
Ozcat, Australia

Couldn't find much info on the 38E model other than the Cat serial number book shows the model starting in 1958 but I suspect it's actually a 1959 - 1965 model that would correspond to the US 99E models with the D333 engine. These engine parts (used) are still commonly available.

Thanks Old Magnet.

I appreciate your response. Been away so apologies for the late reply. Found out the motor is completely blown and all the casing around the diesel injector rail is smashed away with the cam hanging out the bottom ! not good. The current owner says the motor is trashed and a throw away. Am wondering what will bolt into there from the cat range....a D6 motor from that era ?

Apparently the grader was working 2 years ago and everything else is fine except the engine. Not6 sure how many engines would be available in Australia for the old gal. I think its a 1959. I see that there is Tilleys in Queensland that are parting out 12E graders but I guess they want a premium for engines..if they have any ?

It might be worth buy a motor from the USA and importing it if they are cheap there. Will do some more research. Any leads greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input and help, as always.

The D333 is a very common engine used in D6's, #12's, and 977's with turbo's from 1959 to mid 1970's. Don't dispose of the old engine until you have a replacement as some items might have to be interchanged such a clutch housings and oil pans. Even an industrial engine from the era would be a likely candidate.

In the mid 70's (about 1974) the engine morfed into the 3306 so that to might be a good candicate...and a better engine.
