Went to look at what I'm told is a 9K this week. Hasn't been run in a few years. Needs the tires pumped up and coolant put back in to run. Has an onboard air compressor off the transmission so that's handy. Missing some glass, needs the side-shift gear replaced but one will come with it, also needs something up front to make the wheel tilt work again. It has a brace in place so they only steer, not tilt. Looked pretty straight, controls and both engines free. Got run off by a bad storm though so gonna have to go back soon when the owner can get it more presentable. Anything I should look for with the 9Ks?

Hi, acprimus.
This post might give you some ideas on what to check. Cat graders were not bulletproof from day one but closer to it than most of their competition. 'Course, they came from a pretty good 'pedigree' - Russell graders were about as good as it got when Cat bought them out back in about 1929.

i had a 9K number 807 as my first Cat. i see that yours has the power steering kit, that is great. in my experience the 9K was an a good old grader but slow to shift if the transmission brake is bad. but all in all i wish i had it back.

D46U straight blade,D46U cat angle blade,allis chalmers AD4 grader and Khoering 404 dragline. D4C 40A,D4 2T and scraper.

Thanks guys. Deas, I've read that thread a couple times now. I'm gonna have to bookmark it for future reference whether I get this one or another one. Bursitis yes the PS should be a nice feature. I'm told many old blades had aftermarket systems put on. I'll find out how well it runs within a few weeks.

What is the hour meter reading ? check for slop at the blade circle shoes, lift arms etc. Any shims left a balls on lift arms? The blade lift gears on the front of the cab can be turned to make the lift more efficient. If the gears are in good shape, you should be able to lift the front wheels without the control levers kicking you back. It does take a good physical engagement and hold even in good shape. Take a look into the chain boxes. Drive chains good, not too much slop. Oil in tandem chain boxes.

Hi, acprimus.
There is another form of power steering built into all but the earliest Cat blades, whether fitted with any form of hydraulically assisted power steering or not. It is controlled by the second control lever in from the right in the standard control box and is called 'the lean wheel control'. Use it in conjunction with the steering wheel and you can make you life a WHOLE lot easier.

On one job where I worked for 7 months in 1971, I used to drive an Australian-built Cat 12 21F series - equivalent the 70D-71D - some quite long distances on bush roads without touching the steering wheel, steering ONLY by the lean wheels. And BOTH blades on that job had the early Cat power assisted steering on them.

I did it just for chuckles and to get to know the machines better.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
