i am chasing parts to repair my pony motor or a short motor to replace mine by short motor i mean a engine without manifolds, carb fuel tank etc i don't need those things as my originals are still in good condition.
something has gone wrong inside the pilot as it stopped suddenly and now wont turn over.
it happend just before we were about to engage the pinion and roll the main over.

I have some used D4 starting engine parts if can help
im not sure what has failed i wasnt there when it happened all i know is it made a slight rattle and then locked up and wont turn over by hand the neighbour was just about to start the main when it happened. any ideas as to what may have failed would be appreciated it was running fine without any funny noises until today other than being a pig to start if it hadn't run for a while normally 3rd pull away she'd go. hopefully i get to look at it tomorrow.

Maybe move your post to the discussion section for more help?
I’d pull the magneto first, to see if the gear didn’t get clobbered, and bent the mag shaft. JM

Yes first remove the magneto and the stator and check the oil level and if no oil in should be a broken connecting rod

thanks for the suggestions i dont think it would be a lack of oil problem since it has just had an oil change and the oil was at the mark before starting a mag gear sounds promising hopefully thats all it is. and i will shift the post to the disscussion side

If your mag gear is broken or the shaft is broken, chances are your crankshaft bearings need attention. Check that before putting a good mag or gear back on it

Hi,
as well as what Neil said a loose pony flywheel was often attributed by Cat Engineers for broken magneto shafts--gear teeth. The shocks back and forth with the flywheel slogging on the key is what likely did it.
I have posted an excerpt from a Service Magazine article on this, but cannot re-post it at present--maybe someone can help out here.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
