Thought one of the many D2 owners would jump on this one. From what I see in the cross section views of the service manual and parts manual there are two pipe plugs on either side bottom of the main case. These are just ahead of the rear bearing support web for the transmission and pinion and would appear to be used for draining the remnants of oil from the bevel gear section in conjunction with the transmission drain plug further forward on center.......I do stand to be corrected.......and can't seem to find my O & M manual for the D2.
Hi NZCat,
OM, I also thought the D2 owners would have taken the bait on this one!!!
However here is a scan from my 3J-5J OMI on the Steer Clutch Housings Drain Plug Locations, my guess is that the U series would be similar/same. Also just forward of the drawbar tongue can be seen the Trans. Drain Plug.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Eddie B.
Hadta go crawl under the kitty for this one. .the plugs next to the brake adjust bolts ARE the drains for the clutches. I'd never paid attention to the other ones. .oops! Starts to make me wonder what else I've missed over the years.
I just checked the Serviceman's reference book. .and it doesn't say a word about the two center drains but I'd guess they also drain the clutch compartments. They look to far apart to be drains for the ring gear compartment.
It is a little misleading in the lit. Hard to tell where the cut away cross section moves from steering clutch to bevel gear compartment. Two sets of plugs for clutch compartment draining seems unusual but I guess it is so.
Thanks very much guys - from the "rush" of initial responses I though I must have offended someone with the "dumbest" question of the week or something.
I like to "play it safe" with my machine due to my lack of knowlege, and not do anything that will harm the old girl, and as I got a nearly two litres (about a 1/2 gallon) of oil from each plug I was sort of wondering if I'd drained something that was supposed to have oil in it - if you see what I mean. One looks at the operators manual and sorta thinks that maybe I'm so dumb I can't read a picture right !!
Thanks heaps anyway
Not to worry. .none of us were born with knowledge of the ol' critters. We all had to learn too. .some of us the hard way 'cuz there wasn't anyone around to ask.
A friend of mine had this bumper sticker on her car "Some people live and learn, others just live"
