i have a cat 830mb scraper and thought of putting a jake on it to help slow it down, is this a wise idea or a bad one ? thanks ew

I never saw one on a scraper but years ago Nello Teer Contractor from NC had several DW20s here in the area building a flood control dam & they had a retarder on the back of transmission case kind of like a torque convertor & was charged with the engine coolant & they seemed to do a good job of slowing down the tractors.The tractors had dump wagons on the back of them & they hauled the fill for close to a mile & was loaded by a 111- Marion shovel.

Ken, have you ever seen a Jake Brake for a 343/1693? Have seen them for 3406. I think it would be a challenge to build one for that old OHC engine.

No Bob I never did see a Jake on a D343 but I can,t remember if that flywheel retarder that Cat used on the truck engine was on a 1693 or just the 3406. Yes I,ve worked on lots of 3406s with the Jake on them.

They where used on most scrapers Ken. Part of the power train not engine if I remember correctly. Basically a fluid coupling in the drive useing trans oil that went to a Large Heat Exchanger crossways behind the top of the rad to get rid of the heat. They where great for performance testing an engine, pull them down to any speed you wanted while sitting still in the shop. I don't know if one is available for EW's machine or not since it's not part of the scraper family, more wheel dozer family. Sure it doesn't travel near scraper speed. Cheapest retarder for him is to drop the bowl.

Bob it was probably around 1960 when Nello Teer did the job here & maybe the coolant was just to cool it & was an oil torque as we never got into one of them & never saw one on any other scrapers that I was around.There were very few of the old DW20s & 21s around except in the coal strippings but boy when the interstates started to be built then the 631s & 641s were around & lots of the 657s.

Hi earthworm,
I stand to be corrected on this but from the 830M units I saw and heard roar past me in Nam I would be certain that they were fitted with the Cat 9 speed torque divider transmission set up, ie, 3 speed manual range trans. and 3 speed automatic (torque divider trans), ala 769 truck, & 600 series scrapers, and because of this I'm surprised that the 830M's were not fitted with this retarder.
Perhaps there is room to adapt one of the retarders from one of the above into the 830 M, along with the requisite cooler, lines ,controls, etc.
As you will see by the attach. pic the retarder fits to the rear of the T/Div. unit. Have O/H'd and tested many of these units over the years at the Dealer.
Another option may be to fit in an after market magnetic drive line retarder--fits up to the drive shaft I believe--.

Eddie, you must have heard them shifting automatically on the run them. The impression I get of the 830 is it's prety much a 87A 988 with the cab turned around. The 88's had a powershift with a seperate torque mounted to the engine. The torque divider trans could be used and if that's what he has it would take a retarder.

Well Earthworm,
I hope ya got a big cheque book handy if you have to fix a s/h retarder and want to fit it to your scaper. Last time I bought seals for them they were $500 each (require two of em ). Parts are getting extremely hard to find for those old 3x3 trans/ torque divider set ups.

From what I understand you just don't put aretarder on a non retarded engine there are many differences between the two. But what you might consider is an exhast brake, Blue Ox still manufactures them for many applacations.
