I am installing new spark plugs in my pony motor. I was wondering what is the correct plug for it. The plugs that were in it was champion d-16. I told that it should have w16y.The pony motor is on a 1953 cat d2.Thanks.

The Champion D series is a smaller plug than the older "W" series. We've discussed plugs before, most guys say anything but Champions. I too admit to used to saying that but I have a set of Champions in my pony motor and have been having Good Luck with them.

Three things come to mind to help your plugs perform well. Use only copper wires, no radio suppression wires. Magneto fired plugs set at .025 gap. Check your spark color. If not blue, change the condenser.

daves--i have read that the Auto 386 and the NGK A6 are good plugs for the pony.

For myself though I am told I have the newer heads with the plug in the middle of the head and they are a smaller plug dia. My research shows the D-16 is an 18MM plug with a 1/2 inch reach.
I currently have Champion J8C plugs in and they are 14mm with a 3/8 inch reach, but i doubt if they are the correct plug. Would appreciate any one here if they know the correct NGK or Autolite plug for my pony!
My diesel is a D311--7S8119 which i believe is an industrial engine in my 4U-7412

The new NGK number is AB-6 and they work just fine, stock number 2910. The A-6 is obsolete.

Pretty easy to remember the Autolite line up.....#386 for the 18mm and #86 for the 14mm.

i have yet to have a champ D-16 give me any problems in any of my 6 cat pony motors 2 cyl john deere's
or farmalls. put a new set in gapped to 25 and fire up, champion plugs have been around a long time and
came in most of the old tractors when they left the factory

If you are around this weekend, motor on up to Cayucos, and check out the antique equipment that will be on display in the vacant lot next to the tavern. Look me up, I'll be there with a couple of old engines. Leaving the cat's home this time.

Been rooting around in the spark plug info and found the following: The Autolite 386, 86 and the NGK XR4 are all resister type plug so I'd cross them off the list even though they fit.

For the 14mm Cat #8F5899 which is a Champion UJ-12 the best candidate replacement is the NGK-B2 or an Autolite A11

For the 18MM Cat #2A3643 which is a Champion D-16 the best candidate replacement is the NGK AB6 or Autolite B8 or BT8
