Hi; I am looking to purchase a Cat 12 grader for use on my farm. I have it narrowed down to 4 different units. Can anyone tell me the year of each;
The serial numbers are: Cat 12 #8T18527, Cat 12 #8T13547, Cat 12 #8T11013 and Cat 12E #99E8444.
Also, does anyone have any particular positive or negative information about any one of these particular units? Could a turbocharger be added to any of these
units safely? Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Roland

The 8T's used the almost bullet proof D318 engines
8T 11013 (1952)
8T 13547 (1954)
8T 18527 (1956)

The oil clutch version (desirable) came in at 8T 16361-up

The 12E 99E8444 (1963) used the D333 engine.

Both engines had turbo applications but I can't say that I would bother doing that.

If condition and prices of the machines are close, I'd go for the 12E. If it still has the "buzz bomb" pony motor, it's real easy to convert to direct start. Another reason might be parts availability. .it's probably going to easier to find parts for the 12E.

As far as a turbo, I've never seen the need for one on my own 12E. .it runs out of traction in the lower gears before running out of power unless I'm really pushing it hard in the higher gears and/or steep roads shoving a lot of snow and this is at 5,000 to 6,000 ft elevation.

Hi, Roerjm.
You choose. All are good graders with the two newer ones being the better ones, with the oil clutch and better parts availability. Re turbo-charging one of these jiggers, if you can spin all four wheels on a locked-up tandem drive in second gear under load, which most of them could, how much more grunt do you really need? Save your money. There are cheaper ways of tearing up tyres, burning more fuel and blowing up engines and you won't get much more work done, if any.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
