I bought a 4U series D2 and I'm in the process of changing the fluids, adjusting everything, and accessing the mechanical condition of the tractor. I've got the starting engine squared away but I have a problem with starting clutch oil leakage. The starting clutch actuator shaft appears to be a 'steel on steel' seal with the housing. I don't see any seals either on the tractor or in the parts book. My is worn and consequently, the oil from the starting clutch compartment leaks through the shaft near the handle. Other than replacing the housing and shaft, does anybody have a solution for the leakage?
Hi, sounds like you're overfilling the starter pinion clutch housing. There is a drain plug on the front end of the housing and the fill level plug is just below the clutch/brake lever. It doesn't take much oil.
There is another sump to check for the other end of the pinion. The drain plug is on the front side of the bell housing (hidden below the starter pinion housing) with the fill level plug on the side, below the pinion engage lever.
Use Crankcase oil for both.👍
The lever shaft hole can be bored out and a bushing installed if it's really loose, or just run it as-is.
