Were all of the holt traction engine boilers oil fired? Was oil plentiful in that part of the country at the time? It seems as though wood would have been the choice of fuel in that part of the country. I have tried to find pictures of those early engines, but the photos I have found either don't show the firing end of the boiler at all, or the photo is so poor you can see no details. Best Regards Bill

I have some notes from a brochure that listed 225lbs/hr coal or 28 gal/hr oil consumption for the 60HP engine, and 200lbs/hr coal or 25gal/hr oil for the 40HP engine. The brochure didn't mention it, but I have seen some pics showing wood storage on the back for using wood for fuel. I think there were some straw burners too.

I think it all was up to where the machine was, if oil was in abundance it would be more profitable to burn oil , same with wood or coal. The same would work for straw

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
