In the future I'm going to pay more attention to covering my kitties from the harsh weather we have here in Colorado. This all stems from my latest purchase of the D8 14a which he said had only been sitting for 5 years, which was probably closer to 10, we've all heard that one before. Actually this is a continuation of my thread on magneto problem on D8 14a but we wandered away from the topic so I'll start all over again. I'm still dealing with the pony pinion not engaging problem but things are looking up, I finally got the pony pulled and started looking into it. Old Magnet had this one figured out, nothing wrong with the pinion gear it self. I pulled the small cover plate underneath the 2 vertical linkage shafts and started poking around with a small bar, the pinion shaft that goes to the pinion gear was mildly stuck but the more I worked it the better it got. I discovered this was only half the problem, this would only engage the pinion gear half way. The 2 shafts coming down from above were still seized not allowing the small shaft full travel. Had to go ahead and pull the trans off the motor to get access to the shafts, it was fairly simple to slide the small yokes off the large shaft and push them both out the top. Then the fun began, I was amazed at how stuck they were. It took lots of heat and my biggest brass hammer to get them moving again. I think I have salvaged them just short of destroying them, a new seal and o rings and I'm going back together. Apparently water kept going down around the top seal past the upper bushing and seized the bottom bushing. But it ran fine when they parked it, which takes us back to the words of wisdom. This could have all been avoided with a good tarp and tie downs which I now have to do on six machines. Thanks to Old Magnet and Gemdozer and others for their support. I hope to have it back together in a few days, I'll let you know how it turns out.
