I took my cylinders off to get them rebuilt and the hydraulic shop found that not only do the rods need to be cut off and replaced but also that the one "barrel" is so badly rusted and pitted on the inside, that it will need to be replaced as well. They recommend cutting both ends off and putting a new barrel in. My question is: isn't there such a thing as a sleeve that can be put in there so I can maintain the original appearance on the outside? Kind of how a speedi-sleeve works.

As always, thanks for the input.

You didn't mention how bad the pits were so I'm assuming your hydraulic shop already knows they can't be honed out. If they can't answer that question for you, you may want to talk to a shop that hones hydraulic barrels to determine if the old one can be saved.

You might want to harass the Belzona guy as well. I've never used it to correct a defect in the barrel of a hydraulic cylinder so I do not know if it will hold up. If you can fill the pits and hone the cylinder, you'd be up and running in no time.

But they said it is too deep to hone. I did feel the pits. They are deep so I agree with them. There are only three pits which are very small in size but they are deep enough for concern. What is that stuff? Similar to the old JB weld? Seems like a great idea to me but will it hold, work, and not ruin the new seal? Thoughts?

Thanks for the idea!

- Degrease
- Use Black Beauty OR Black Diamond to blast. (not sand) 3 or 4 mil
- Belzona 1111 super metal
- 3 orange to 1 part black. Mix until consistent in color.
- Apply smooth with wall
- Hone it

George Green out of Nebraska -four zero two-987-2570

But they are not giving that stuff away. The smallest container is $250.

That $250 I mentioned was for the epoxy. I think he said it was a 1K tub. Does that sound right? It sounded like way more than I will need so he referred me to a local shop that he knew had some, and would do it for me. Going to give them a buzz shortly.

Did you get any hurricane damage?

Jamie,
did they give you a price for the new barrel? It might not be too bad. If there was only fifity bucks between that and the putty fix, I know what I'd choose. I don't think it would change the appearance as the barrel is just a straight tube anyway. Find out and let us know - I have a LaPlante-Choate that I'm sure will need to be done.
Cheers,
Neil.

They quoted me $470 to replace the barrel. I have a couple in the trees I need to look at before I decide what to do.

I wouldn't expect the repair to cost you more than $150. It just has to be done right. If you buy two of them, a new barrel is a better deal.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
