just wondering if someone out there remembers a modified d8 made up back in the 1950's? I believe they were made up on the 2u series and some early 14a's. also think I remember them using the 337 engine from the twin stack dw21's. seems that they couldn't cool them well, and they didn't last long.

Hi Drujinin,
I believe there is a D8 McCoy down in the Western District here In Victoria.

Also there definately is a D7 powered by a D326. The local Dealer did buy in 2 D7's (only one known to still exist) for the Australian PMG (Post Master General) the telecomunications and postal service of the day.
The machines came from the Cat Factory less the normal 4 cyl D339 and were re-powered by the Dealer. This was in about 1957-8.

OM,
thanks for the McCoy Story. Bought back some memories. I had heard about the D8's from my old Engine Bay boss who worked on the D7 re-powers, he told me all about them.

When the D346 came out in scrapers and we had to do some mods for Cat of Australia. As an Apprentice I was gobsmacked by the twin cam, four valve, turbo charged, aftercooled and waste gated set up, but, John said, "Eddie, it has all been done before" He then proceeded to show me a 2Ton Parts Book with the Hall-Scott OHC engine, that settled it I had to have one and some 10 or so years later I did.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for all the info on that rig. The pictures are great! I thought so much water had gone under the bridge, that my memory was going bad.I will share this with a couple other old catskinners, and I'm sure they will enjoy it too.

Hello to everyone

Does anyone know wether or not there are any of these McCoy Special D8 tractors that have survived in the U.S.A. it would be interesting to know, also does anybody happen to know the Serial Numbers of any of those tractors. Are McCoy's still "CAT" Dealers ?? I would be very interested to know these details. My Email address is - <a href="This email address is being protected from spambots. Alan, McCoy Cat became Wagner Cat back in the 70's sometime, they are still the Cat dealer for the whole state of Colorado...I have lots of memories of the McCoy store in Grand Junction, it was the place I, as the spoiled first kid in the family, nagged my 2 teen-age aunts to take me so I could "drive" the shiny yellow machinery on display...
This was in the early 50's so it's possible there was a McCoy special there at the time...sorry, no pics...

McGuire Company from I believe Algona, Iowa had a 2U with a DW20 motor and also had the DW20 radiator in it. It was a bigger radiator and it was raised about 4 or 5 inches above the hood. He used it to push his D8's with 80's behind them back in the late 50's and early 60's. It also had twin stacks. Maybe someone from that country can add to this. It really did a nice job of pushing.
