Does anyone know if there is a RAL code for the earlier Cat yellow paint (pre '79)

I don't think there is one as such - RAL is a European based system.

I found a Vapormatic paint, vintage JCB, that I used to paint a Thwaites dumper and matched it to the closest RAL shade. (1028, melon yellow) It's a deep yellow and seems to be a good one.

I'm not sure how well up you are on this paint spraying malarky, but in my opinion I'd only consider and industrial two pack product. Expect to pay circa £20/litre + hardener.

Julian,

Thanks. it was all a bit of a 'carry on', called Finnings and they said I'd have to collect it from them (++++ miles) because TNT refused to transport the stuff, so then thought about sourcing it somewhere locally by matching it up (PPG or something similar), the nearest they could offer was "bring a sample of paint and we will match it", well, long story short then called Finnings St. Austell because I'd found a mug to pick it up for me.....explained the situation to the parts guy and he went off and called TNT, explained the situation, their response was that they now would actually carry it but it must be packaged up good enough so the lid stays on.

Anyway I am going with the ordinary TC1039 paint, its not 2 pack, I don't have facilities for that stuff, plus its hazardous.....reckon it will be alright

I'm sure it will be just fine. Conventional solvented paint doesn't cover as well or leave the same film thickness as 2K. (for similar numbers of coats) Nor is the finish as tough and durable, but it's not worth getting too exited over!

I've used 2K on an ERF and trailer, you only need one of those activated charcoal 3M masks (the ones that make you look like an insect!) to work safely (assuming you're not using it all day every day) As it's easier to use than conventional and also probably cheaper as 2 coats are absolutely sufficient for a decent result then the advantages vastly out-weight the only negative which is that the fumes are poisonous.

PS, if you do it outdoors on a decent day then you're laughing 😊

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
