hello, im new here and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on a D8 2U. Im fixing to buy one that has been owned by a family member for quite some time. The machine has been well kept and has only had minior problems. It has has a brand new head on it, hasnt been primed yet and the valves need to be adjusted, the undercarriage is in perfect shape. I just want to know if this machine is reliable and pretty usable, iv worked on alot of D6 9Us with my grandfather but never a D8. also this D8 has a root blade and a V-shear blade for it. so any useful advice would be well appreciated.
thanks, John

Welcome aboard Cat Boy, You will have to endure my pathetic attempt at Australian humour here, but be patient, someone experienced in the D8 2U and with more brains than me will chime in here pretty quickly, they are one of the best crawlers built by Cat from what I keep hearing and they were made in large numbers, upwards of 50,000 I believe of that basic design.

From what I just read I think you ticked all the boxes with this old girl already with your question, and I doubt you need our opinion, I mean most of us bottom feeders here drag home old wrecked Cat rubbish to restore that should be going to China as scrap, much to the amazement of our family and friendsπŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Anyways, let's run through some key points I've learnt about buying old Cats

(A) D8 2U A+++++ (23,537 of that model made from 1945 to 1953, a proven tractor)
(😎 Family owned A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
(C) New undercarriage A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
(D) Reconditioned head A++++++++++++++++++++++++++
(E) Overall excellent condition A+++++
(F) You are a experienced Cat Operator A+++++
(G) Tractor is next door, so no $8,000 float bills across 3 States A++++++++++++
(H) No doubt recently serviced, and full tank of diesel A+++++
(I) Comes with original sale documents, and Operator Books A+++++
(J) Comes with full service history, no faked records A+++++
(K) Comes with optional extras like root and V blades A+++++
(L) Comes with a reliable family member relief driver when needed A+++++

Yes Cat Boy, the only negative I can see with this tractor is you are thinking of actually paying for it, have you thought about waiting a bit and maybe inheriting it?πŸ˜†

Good luck with your purchase, a nice D8 2U with excellent undercarriage sold here in Australia back in Feb for about $US5,000 only because they are dinosaurs with their pilot motor start, and I saw a D8 1H sell for the same amount more recently but it needed undercarriage work, I know you can't even buy the tracks and undercarriage for that money, so it all depends on the price your folks are asking but it sure sounds like the perfect old Cat to me..
regards
Mike

well i dont have the serial number yet.... but ill be going up to the farm and getting it this weekend. and thank you guys so much, im only 19 but iv been on these old cats since i was 13 and i know a little. but im no major mechanic lol. but the only thing that is worrying me about this machine is the valve adjustments and just over all use of the machine. i dont plan on running the piss out of this old girl, but i want to do some land clearing. oh and it turns out she was a coal pusher. someone told me that keeps the tracks perserved or something like that. and i think the reason why he had to put a head on it was cause it was warped or something, and old magnet it has a wet clutch, but it has a front winch insted of a rear i havent worked much on those.........😞. and anybody feel free to chime in, i really need the advice!!πŸ˜†

It looks like those rails have some life in them yet, I wish mine were that good. I'd like to think I see a decent wear mark on the sprocket. I like the way the tracks hang. She hasn't done any work in a long time, I would like to see what those tracks look like after she has been pushing brush for a while I'm a shine junkie.
