I was really shocked and angry yesterday to learn that a scrapper was bidding in the auction and won quite a few bids. Not sure what all he packed off but the whole idea is just sickening. Those scumbags should not have even been able to bid!! We are supposed to be preserving these machines not selling to scrappers!! Just because these rigs were not all painted up and setting in a big expensive building were nothing is ever started and run just looked at doesn't mean they should have been scrapped. I made a remark to one of the Cat club officials at the show, "Great idea having an auction when scrap is high and the economy is in the toilet!!" his response was "well the scrapper was willing to sell anything he bought" Well PERFECT!! that just cuts out the young collector that is still working for a living and trying to survive in this economy. I thought this organization was great until now. What is our goal? preserve old cat equipment or build big expensive buildings that are used a few weeks a year for limited pieces of equipment to sit in all pretty and collect dust. I think the thing to do is avoid large organizations and concentrate on saving what we can with friends with like interests. Ted Halton you should be ashamed of yourself you have lost all my respect, I hope you and all the founders of the Brooks Cat museum are proud of yourselves. Sincerely Charlie Davis

Guess if you wanted something, you should have outbid him. He has the right to go to an open Auction and buy for what he feels he can profit from. Hence he paid less than scrap value after all he still has to cut it up and separate the ferrous from the non-ferrous.
He is after all just trying to make a living.

Pretty obvious you have made your fortune in wall street and could care less about the preservation of old equipment. You must be one of those collectors that see it all as an "investment" hope you do well with that. It is your type that has driven the working class out of all these hobbies starting from the hit and miss gas engines on up to the big iron. Well when enough of it has been cut up and your stuff is worth 3X as much then your kids can sell it for SCRAP!!!

I put a post similar to this one in the show thread two days ago and no one had the nerve to answer it yet, I agree with this young gent that started this thread, this should not have happened, IF the stuff didn't sell and the owners didn't want it back then the museum could have called the junkies and had them come by at a later date, scrap is pretty high right now and has pushed the value of things higher than a lot of people can afford, the junkie will most likely pay the same money at your place just as well as at auction, so the seller may not be out much.

Take it easy there dragsawmaster.....watch the ole blood pressure. I think most folks would agree with you, it's just not a class act nor respectful to the collector to have his stuff equated to scrap right under his nose. Sort of like parking the "crusher" at a car show.

If it's unwanted left overs after the fact, that's a different story.
Now days it seems everthings for the buck, no discretion involved.

Hi, Dragsawmaster.
Let's get this straight. As I understand it, (and please feel free to correct me if I am wrong) the auction was held by, for and for the benefit of the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Museum, which I have been told is a separate entity from the ACMOC club.

Also as I understand it, ACMOC had little IF ANY say about who could or could not bid or buy at that auction.

In years gone by, I have been told that ACMM did their own auctioneering. This time, they hired an auctioneering company to do the actual auctioneering. Maybe you ought to be writing to ACMM and/or the auctioneers to voice your concerns.

Further, I personally have no idea where Drujinin made his bucks, if indeed he has any great stockpile of them, BUT I do think that your comment about his making his bucks on Wall Street and his level caring about old Cats is more than a little out of line considering his past involvement with this forum.

Yes, I can understand your dismay at the turns of events but I would suggest that you direct whatever ire you may have toward the appropriate parties instead of simply lashing out at all and sundry or whoever may pop up on your radar.

I vaguely remember an OLD saying that had something to do with making sure that the hammer was pulled all the way back before squeezing the trigger. Maybe taking a good look along the sights before firing may help to hit the target too.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

All I said is that its a free country, you can not discriminate against the Scrap man coming to the Auction same as any other Nationality, let alone stop him from bidding. Yes it is sad that the Donater had to watch his machine put into a scrap dumpster, but if he felt it had a particular value, then he should have put a "Reserve" on it. Then he could have kept it and sold it to you at a later time.
As far as "flaming" at me, speak your piece because everyone who isn't banned from this Forum that know me, know that my income is same or less than yours.
I for one couldn't afford to go to Brooks, so I assume that you could afford to go?

As I stated in the other thread about the auction:

I would direct your auction questions here:

http://www.topbidauctioneers.com/
TOP BID AUCTIONEERS
17920 SE McLOUGHLIN SUITE B
MILWAUKIE OR 97267

(503) TOP-BIDS
(503) 867-2437

If that does not work then try the Show coordinator
Mike Biegalke (360) 606-8000

Side note:

There is a point in time were the scrap price exceeds the current value of an item.
We are at that point in time, unless it is rare and has a great deal of value we as collectors can not save every piece of caterpillar history that is on its way to the scrapper.
On the flip side, what ever is scrapped today will only make what is left more valuable.

Just something to think about.

You have to at least give him credit for starting a thread on the subject, rather than hijacking Sue's fine thread about the show, like others have done...although I agree about the sadness of scrapping stuff, it looks like opening a can of worms to try banning bidders from an auction...

Is there a link to find out what price the Cats in the Brooks auction made ?
also does anybody know how much the Best 25 made at auction earlier in the
year ? I think it was April or May in California (I think).

I agree with ronm on this should be in a new thread which is why I didn't put in my thoughts on Aaron's post on the other thread.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
