Does anybody know if a Cat Thirty has a brake on the clutch? I just got one running after sitting for a while and have adjusted the clutch so it snaps in nice and will release but my problem is if I let it idle for two or three minutes with the clutch released and the transmission in neutral the entire assembly starts to spin and there is no way to put it in gear because the entire assembly and transmission input spins. I am wondering if there is supposed to be brake lining somewhere that is missing in the clutch assembly. Thanks in advance
Jim

You can't get it to stop spinning, even if you push the clutch lever hard in the release direction?

I haven’t pushed hard on the lever yet, but I have pushed on it. I am not one to force things until I know for sure how things work. I was wondering if you needed to do that and I will try it. Like I said I just got this thing running and am thinking that the driven disk may have some surface rust on it. I just am not sure if the back of the release collar toward the transmission was supposed to have any kind of material on it so when you push it hard against the transmission it would stop it.

Maybe I've only driven machines that were badly out of adjustment, but I usually have to push the main clutch lever all the way forward and wait for everything to stop moving before I can change gears. Patience!

The main clutch disc is the only material in there. I'd like to hear from someone about proper adjustment, though, but I bet it's already been posted somewhere.

My Thirty will do the same thing if it sits for any length of time without being driven. To free it up I let it idle in gear with the clutch dis-engaged for a minute or two, while I sit on the tractor. That seems to shine things up in the clutch and she will perform fine until the tractor sits for another lengthy stretch without being driven. I do not think there is any kind of a brake on the clutch to prevent it from spinning while dis-engaged Best of luck, I'am sure you will get it straightened out Bill

Thank you for your help. I did a search but did not find anything specific about adjustment (that’s why I don’t post too often love the search mode) Maybe someone can chime in and let me know.

The parts book does show a small disk on the input shaft next to the transmission.

I did not have a Cat 30 book but here is what the Best 30 Book said.
I could not get them to scan very well because the bindings on my book are still very good- sorry. I hope this helps in some way.

Hard to make it out but there does appear to be a clutch brake arrangement, showing a friction plate??? attached to the transmission side that the throwout hub would contact when the lever is pushed back.

When you push the clutch handle forward, collar s56 moves rearward against friction disk s52, held on by 4 1/4-20 machine screws. This friction disk only wears when the handle is pushed foward. If braking the clucth assembly is difficult, then it may be the bearing in the clutch plate s59. With the transmission in netural and main clutch open, the clutch assembly should turn freely by hand. For the bearing you will need the parts drawing for the cat 30.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
