Hello: I am a new member to this club and I am about to take possesion of this D318 power unit that came off an old retired sawmill some years ago. I am going to use it to power my Frick 00 sawmill which is currently powered (underpowered) by a Ford BSD 444. I am expecting to have plenty of power to spare... I am hoping somebody here knows the year of serial number 5v5983. The name plate says full load governed rpm is 1600, which, if I don't change any pulley sizes will give me close to the right blade speed. Any thoughts on whether to try to slow down the motor with a bigger drive pulley? Can anyone recommend a source for manuals. I'd love to see the torque curve for this motor... Thanks

Year built is 1948.
Plenty of range with the D318...anywhere from 1000 to 1800 rpm is good.
Sorry, don't have the curves.....well, sort of....have access to the "bruce oz" stuff but it is not legible.

if you save them and view them in another format they are legiable, but not very good.

Try Adobe Photoshop, mine is Elements 5.0 version

Thank you for the info. I am more excited than ever to get this thing belted to the saw... I am supposed to pick the thing up this Friday.
What I read from these hp/torque curves is that Cat did not dino test these motors, but had their designers who used God-knows-what critical parameters to calculate allowable load hp/torques. I would be willing to bet that a dino test of this motor would much yield much higher hp than the name plate.
Should I go to ebay for the service manuals? Happy tracks.

Yep the evil bay is good for orgionals, make sure you get the manuals in relation to serial #s rather than model type...........................

The D318 Servicemen's Reference book is Form FE30238- (mine is -4) and covers all D318's in all machines and power unit versions, generators, marine etc.

I don't have a parts book on just a D318 power unit. That's where your serial number is important. If you get a later book, it usually will cover from beginning of the series to the end, but not always. The D318 was made a long time and the books for the tractors that used them are divided at about the mid point of the run when major modifications were made.

Operator's instructions are usually very broadly written, covering both old and new versions where there are differences.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Don't know how you can assume that-of course Cat had access to dynamometers-they are not new technology by any means...the Prony brake was used to test steam engines..a HP-torque curve just pulled out of some engineer's ass would be false advertising...

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
