Very cool. I am not an AG guy. What is the elevating grader used for? Drainage ditches?
I think they had multiple purposes, I know they were used for road construction. They could also be used for filling wagons. I'm really a newbie to earth moving equipment, so hopefully some more knowledgeable people will chime in.
My understanding is that they were developed prior to the pan scraper and were used to load wagons with material for building roads. The annual Rock and Dirt show in Wisconsin demonstrates one every year. They fill various vintage wagons and scraper pans with material to be moved to another location for unloading. There various vintage of equipment towed graders, self powered graders and dozers level the material. Search a little more on youtube for videos on it.
they were several different models and yes they were designed to pickup material and load it into a wagons or the side of a road.

Here is the one that Drujinin was talking about it was restored and run by Alan Smith, This was Al's pride and joy. Thanks for the information guys, it sounds like I will have to try make it over to the Rock and Dirt show in Wisconsin. We'd like to get some old dump bottom wagons for it, so far, we just have one that is a little on the small side. I also have a McCormick Deering Iron Mule which I am planning on using with it.

There are some pictures of a similar Iron Mule as well as some information on this page. http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/h/hughes_keenan/hughes_keenan.htm![]()
