Here’s how I did it.

In preparing to install new tires the old tires and rims needed to be removed. The old tires were mismatched and in poor condition and the rims needed to be painted. I elected to destroy the old tires since they had no salvage value. The biggest challenge was to remove the rims from the cast hubs – there was 30+ years of “swelled” rust in the interface joint.

Step 1 (photos 3554, 3556) – Blocked up rear of grader to enable rotating wheels. Cut old tire and tube around circumference both sides with sawzall. (removed bead section by grinding wire with angle grinder).

Step 2 (photos 3549, 3553) - Removed all lug nuts and clamps. Use “Shorty” hydraulic ram to press on rim (installed ram near bottom of tandem box where very stiff). Learned rim would not budge unless rim was heated with rosebud on outside diameter near rusted joint. Even with heat applied, 8 TON jack load was required to slip the rim at hub joint – movement was about 3/16”. Indexed wheel 120 deg and repeated hydraulic press. Continued process many times to slowly push rim off.

Step 3 (photo 353😎 – Sandblasted and painted rims; installed new O-rings and Firestone tubeless tires.

Kent, I know you are a handsome man, but placing a young man-model in the picture acting like you, will not turn back the hands of time 😆 :flypig:

Glad you cut the tire off before heating with the rosebud. That topic has been covered before about shop safety and the use of heat on tire-mounted rims.

Bruce, you have a sharp eye. I had the lad cut the tires while I was on an urgent mission to hunt morel mushrooms! Seriously, he is 40 years younger than I and is showing interest in Caterpillar machines so I am encouraging him along with wrenching and operating experiences.

Tugger:

For 13.00-24 12 ply bias tubeless, prices from US companies run $450-500 each. Imports are available for less. There currently seems to be a serious shortage of supply. New orders may take months to deliver and prices are rising.

Kent I thought you was playing Al Smith , standing in the back ground and pointing and telling how to do it .

Jeff I did not see the easy chair. Too bad the chair is gone or I would load it up for Kent.

Had a nice visit with Kent yesterday. He was up my way so we had some time to Chat face to face. I did try and sell him some tires, but not Grader Tires.
