I own a great running early big Cat 20 that I have driven myself for over 60 years. Unfotunately, my dad destroyed the brass plates with the serial number many years ago when he replaced the seating area with one from a Cat 25. Is there a s/n any place else on this machine? There is a number (L-221) cast into the plate over the clutch housing, but I think this is a casting number only.

There should be a number stamped into the top of the trans housing behind the raised portion of the steering clutch adjustment area. I have seen some of these far enough back that the seat box covers it up. Hope this helps.

HI There is a second place the number might be. It is on the crankcase by the lifters for cylinder #4. I am going to try and include a picture. Also I have included a picture of where it is on the trani case.

Thanks mucho! I found the S/N in both places, by the valve lifters on cyl 4 and on the transmission housing. The number was 4085 which places it as manufactured in Peoria. I saw a list at Tulare of the dates of manufacture broken down by serial nembers. Does anybody have that list for the big cat 20?

Hello drarv,

Your big "20", Serial No L 4085 is not correct as the tractors in
question were only built from 1927 and discontinued in 1929, with a total
of only 1,970 "L" series tractors built numbered from 1. they were followed by the "PL" series
which came into production during 1928 and were discontinued in 1932.,
with a total of 6,598 tractors built. I hope that this helps.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
