Hi guys its me again...
I've been working on the powerunit quite a bit as im on vacation.
Worked at the flamethrower do-dad that's in the intake manifold.
I would like to get it working so the little guy starts with out getting hooked
on the either bunny.
I dont think it was being used the last times the engine was running,so the wireing was missing.
Any idea if this thing uses 12 or 24 volts,I looked at the coil that generates the spark but it has no visable markings.
I wired it up with the start solinoid because there is a warning to only use it when engine is cranking.
I would think that I would roll the engine with the fuel rack in the off position and pump the handle. As pressure is built in the line and this trips a switch which allows the coil to generate a spark at the sparker.
This should ignite the fuel mist in the manifold on its way to the cylinders.
With some heat in the cylinders the throttle would be advanced and it should start right up.
Sounds awesome on paper...does it work.
Aint got a clue, but im getting there.
Not sure how long to use it when attempting start.
And just because im curious, whats this things proper name.

Thanks again your faithfull reader Chris

Yes, when they are tuned up they work well. Just called a Manifold Heater.
These scans should answer your questions.

Where's the pics????????

Once again you step up and help the new guy.
Thank you very much.
I think I would drive a long way to buy you a beer and shake your hand.
Pictures will be along as soon as I get the Missus to help with them.
3 very nice cameras here and im not qualified for any of them.
I do well to read and write and turn wrenches.

I'd love to see pictures of your manifold heater. I've seen the parts diagram in my
brother's D4 5T parts book and I have liked the set up ever since. I'd really love to find
this setup for my D4400 power unit. If you need to see the parts diagram out my brother's
book let me know and I'll scan it for you.

Thanks, Josh

Where can you buy the heater? My neighor was telling me that the Oliver tractors of the 1970s used a air intake heater, would this work on a d47j.
Thanks Joe

I am not familiar with the Cat Manifold heater on the 4400 ,but I have had a bit to do with Perkins manifold heaters . The P3 and P6 motors made in the early 50's used them and they are available as a repro on UK Ebay , under " Fordson Tractor " The P6 motor has a small hand pump that sprays fuel onto the heater coil , they worked Well. there is a version available today called a Thermostart. Used on Ford, Perkins, Yanmar and other diesels. A search on "thermostart" will get some hits to show about these. They would only be useful on tractors with a battery as opposed to the CAT design using the magneto to ignite the fuel.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Cat had both battery and magneto fired heaters. Check my earlier post on instructions.

Chris,

Here's the pictures. Keep in mind that these diagrms are for a D4 with the D4400
engine and this set up runs off the pony motor magneto.

Hope it helps, Josh
