Hi guys,
Getting ready for winter here and I am starting to think about how I will get my D2 started if the need arises to push some snow. I got my D2 last spring and have had some fun pushing dirt, and tearing up the lawn with it all summer. I have a rope start pony motor which starts fine and gets the main engine going with out too much fuss in the warm weather. Problem is the pinion engagement lever has to be held in place during the entire start up procedure, it doesn't latch as it should and then kick out when the main engine starts. This is not too bad in warm weather since I only need to hold it in place for less than 1 minute before I can get the diesel started. I am thinking some block/oil pan heating will be needed for winter starting. So what do you guys use? I have not found in my internet searches any specific heater for the D2 or D311 engine. I bought a kats 300W magnetic heater for the oil pan, but before I impulsively buy anything else I figured I would ask here for any tried and true methods.
Any suggestions??
Thanks,
-Joe

Try doing a search on the subject as this has been discussed before.
I'll need to start mine tomorrow morning. Set it on the trailer yesterday morning and as I walked away I was thinking I should drain the warm Pony motor oil out to refill it with something lighter. Todays high was 10 or 20 degrees. Tomorrow morning will be just as bad. There will be a young guy there, he can pull the rope for me. I bought Synthetic 5w-30 to put in it today but the sun wasn't shining on it by the time I got home. Oh Well!

I tried doing a search on this sight and did not turn up anything, which I found surprising. My search consisted of the following key words (D2, "block heater")
lots of threads came up... none on topic

Heating the oil pan is usless, get a tank type heater to install on the main engine andinstall it down low and put the warm water into the block drain at the back of the main engine and find a place near the front of the head to return to heater, this will heat the whole engine and also warm the pony to help start it easy also.
good luck, Ron Meeder

Here is a copy of a similar thread running on the ACME forum.

I have a circulating block heater as shown in this link on two D2's... connect the heater inlet to the 1/2'' boss on the lower radiator pipe, and the heater outlet to the 1/2'' fitting on the thermostat housing... mine are on " U " series tractors... not sure if a " J " series has those two fittings... if not, another location could be found.

It is really not difficult,( well it's not fun) to adjust the pinion to stay latched. In the end you will be glad you did.

I would think you should look at the adjustment on your pinion latch--if it is correct you should be able to spin the diesel for 5 minutes or so in cold weather which will make it start more easily.

Here is a picture of the one from Northern Tool that is installed on my D2... when the lower engine side curtain is on you don't even see it.
It heats both the pony and Diesel engines very well...

I can't help but notice the Electric Starter AND Pony Motor on your D2. It never hurts to have a "Plan B".👍

I agree with other posts regarding the pinion. Even if you have to rebuild it, it is not prohibitive in expense and you will be so much happier.

After that bugger smashed my finger down to 1/16 I rebuilt the pinion and I became a much nicer person!👍

As for the block heater you can get them on amazon. Just search Kat's tank heaters.
I know this thanks to bcwayne.

I started my D2 when it was 10 degrees F (above 0) and it started fine. I ran the pony - spinning the diesel for about 3 minutes - 1 minute with compression - then put the fuel to it with a wiff of either. No problem - it started right up. How cold is it where you guys are staring these things? I wonder how cold it would have to get where the above process wouldn't work for me.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
