I am looking for information on Cat engines from the 1940s and 1950s that would have been used as engines for oil drilling rigs.

I have found that a likely model would have been the D397 (V-12, 500 hp @ 1,200 rpm). Other possibilities are the D364, D375, or D386.

Does anyone have technical specifications for the D397 engine? In particular, I am looking for hp and fuel consumption rate information, although general information about the engine would be useful.

Thanks for any help!

abrandt1980: Here is a simple version of the line-up.

D364 (8-5.75x8.00) became D375 (8-5.75x8.00) became D379 (8-6.25x8.00)

D386 (12-5.75x8.00) became D397 (12-5.75x8.00) became D398 (12-6.25x8.00)

D399 (16-6.25x8.00)

There were various model suffixes (A,B,C,D) with different ratings over the 30 year period.

Thanks for the help! The spec sheets have more information than I could have reasonably expected to find.

Interesting starting system on the D397.....dual direct start starter motors at 32v, one starter on each side of the engine.
