What is the correct oil for a cat D-3 79U series transmission,it is power shift unit. Also what is the correct oil for the hydraulic system. Did a lot of older Cat tractors in the past but this is a different animal than a D2 5U, or a D4 6U. Thanks, Dandy Dave!

Thanks Again. I've pulled a lot of wrenches on old stuff, but I have never worked on a modern D-3. Thinking about it, it should be old enough to be in a museum now being that these tractors are pushing 40. The fellows that have it, handed it to me in a bushel basket with the transmission apart. Almost back together now. The service book does not list the oils. As I remember, cat always used that in the operators book which we do not have yet. Dandy Dave!

My 70's service manual calls for series 3 30 w for the power shift tranny, my 80's d3 manual calls for TO2 30w---but i i have been told to use TDTO4 in the tranny and oil for the steering clutches--I use 30w as i don't run then much in the winter up here in Ma.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
