I would like to start off by saying thanks to Tom Madden for putting on an excellent show! I know these are not easily done, but just like the BSOT, the Best of the West went off smoothly. There were several of us at the BSOT in 2008 that wanted to get all of the high clearance tractors together for a photo shoot but for some reason that never transpired. So we took the oportuunity to do this in Santa Margarita. In the photo's you will see Frank Portera's (aka Firecat) beautifully restored HC Ten, Leroy Roth's (aka Mr. 22) super nice 1D HC Fifteen as well as my HC Twenty Two. I hope you guys enjoy the photo's.

Really nice line up Chad. Your 22 is beautiful. Why was the 1D15 painted gray? :ranger:

Steve,
Thank you for your nice comments. I am not sure why the 1D was painted gray, nor do I know much about its history? Maybe Leroy will jump in here and give us some histroy. There is clearly yellow paint that is visible in some places. Who knows it might be something as simple as, thats just the way a previous owner wanted it!

Steve:

I traded the 1D to Leroy and know the history. The tractor was used by the County of Santa Barbara in CA and was orange. When the guy I got it from was going through the tractor he discoved that under the orange of the finals there was grey paint. There was no grey or yellow under the engine. The man assumed that the tractor was originally a grey tractor and so that is what he painted it.

My guess is that the back 1/2 was extra high 10 stuff that was put together at the factory with 1D components and that is the story.

I had a feeling that was why. Then that's the 1D I made engine panels for. I thought it looked familiar Tom I figured there couldn't be two gray HC15's in your area.😙

Wow, those are beauties. I've never seen the high clearance style tractor before, do you happen to know what type of application they were originally intended for.

Tom,
Thank you for adding the history of that machine!

22Randy,
The HC machines were used for a multitude of reasons which would require a bit more clearance. Probably the most common would be to cultivate row crops. I think the HC machines could also be used in any application where the standard machines would be used with the exception of orchard work where you needed a machine with a lower stance.

The High Clearance 22's were all purpose built to cultivate pineapples in the hawaiian islands. If you notice they are a bit wider and that is for the proper spacing. The HC22's were later replaced by more modern equipment and most of the HC22's found a second life working in mac nut farms or working sugar cane.

Bruce oz,
The citrus 22 progresssion has stopped. Its all together and running very nicely. The old rusty, faded yellow, patina look is starting to grow on me. Sure is alot more maintenance friendly!!

hello WyoCat,one question,i read that the high 22 had 3 3/4'' pistons fitted to cut hp down so it didn't break the the 15 finals fitted to the 22 ? ,did you measure the piston when you rebuilt the engine ? .was wondering if this was so .
i was looking at the post and video's on the 22 orchard yesterday ,yes it looks good the way it is .

Bruce oz,
This is correct. The HC22 was fitted with a special jug with a unique casting number indicating the smaller bore. The engine in my tractor had all of the correct parts. The smaller piston is actually the same piston as the PV series fifteen. All of the high clearance tractors were fitted with the same undercarraige as the HC Ten. They reduced the power of the 22 engine so that the smaller U/C could have a decent life!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
