I have a D2 3j which has a Eisenmann magneto.I along with a few other collectors have been getting the same proplem with the rotor. After a period of time,I get a black ring on the rotor face, this is caused by the brushes leaving a carbon ring after some time.I bench tested the mag,it works perfectly for the equivelant time of a dozen times of the pony motor running then builds up the deposits therfore the mag fails.
Any advise on preventing this fault ?
Thanks
Martyn

I have had a few emails asking me about my health. Thanks for your concerns.
I in fact had a bit of a heart scare and was rushed into hospital two weeks ago after collapsing one night.Been very busy the last few months and been working a lot of day and night shifts,my body gave me a warning which I am seriously taking.I had been feeling pretty fit up until 6 weeks ago.Still haveing tests after a three day stay in hospital.Been told to take it easy which I am finding very hard to do.Lots of projects waiting to be done.
Once again, thanks for your messages from the UK Link boys,ACMOC members and friends.
Regards
Martyn

Hi Martyn,
Looked into my mag literature and about all I could find on rotor carbon tracking was issues of cleanliness. Oil or moisture may be the culprit. Also weak brush springs.

Was surprised to read of your health issues. Hope you are OK. There comes a time when the body tells you to slow down....or else. Not that you can't do what you want to do, it's just the pace of it all that needs changing.

Hello old magnet.
The spring tension seems good,no moisture/oil found when I stripped it down. The brushes were renewed when the mag was overhauled about two years ago.The only thing I can think of is that the brushes may be too soft or poor quality. What type of cleaner would you recomend,I have used a carbon tet.based cleaner in the past but can't get hold of it now.

Martyn
PS On the mend now, waiting test results so I am grounded for now.I think it was caused by repeated shift patten changes and trying to juggle everything else the same time including working hard on restoration projects. Was ok till about a month or so ago then collapsed woke up to find two paramedics looking over me.
Learned a lesson now, to pace things out and chill out.

Hi Martyn,
The last time I had a need for cleaning I used brake cleaner in the squirt can. May not be the best.....I'm sure the techies have a modern substitute for the carbon tech.
Poor quality carbon brushes could be all or part of the problem. Maybe try a set of NOS or original used and see what happens.
Take care.

Use CRC Electrical Connection Cleaner. All the rest of the cleaners (brake etc) contain petroleum solvents that will destroy old electrical insulation. Thanks to the environmental lobby all of these cleaners have been reformulated into worthless.
