Does anybody have any info or pictures of a Holt 22 sheet metal combine? They were built, I would guess late teens early 20's. Thanks; Tad

I don't think there was a Holt 22 combined there was a Holt 30-32 and later a 32 and in 1934 they put the Caterpillar 22 engine on the tin combindes that went on to 1936 when they sold out to John Deere and JD used the 22engine for awhile before changing

Hi Willie, Holt started playing with sheet metal machines after the turn of the century, they had a self-propelled ''tin'' machine in the early teens. I have great pictures that I took of a Model 32 and 30 at the San Joaquin County Ag Museum. The only hint that I can find of a Model 22 is this ad in a Walla Walla newspaper in 1927,about 3/4 down the page under Bulletin Classifieds, it could be a misprint, the Model 32 was being built at that time as Western Harvester Co. There is an old sheet metal, wood framed machine here locally that I have been trying to identify, that I believe is a Holt machine but there are no markings to be found anywhere, it is almost identically the same design as the ''32'' but about 1/2 the size, it is a hillside machine, with rack and pinion leveling (Holt used screw jack leveling) and it has wood sprocketing and gears, the Model 32 had a side mounted direct drive engine, I can find no evidence (no holes, no clamp marks and no oil stains, ect )of where an engine sat on this machine other than the flat belt pulley on the cylinder. May be some one knows of a publication that documents the Holt combine line up. Thanks; Tad

If you cant find engine spot you may want to look at the big wheels for geardrive ring or drive spocket.
The first engine powered Tin Holt had the engine up on the side it was a Wisconson overhead valve with alum. cast sideplates and valvecover that said Holt the later tin models move the engine down on front over the front wheel and first usde the wisconson engine the started useing the 2 ton engine that could be taken off and used for sattioary power elswhere the later came the 10,15 &22 engines
On the tin models the used the scewjack type leveler and on the big wooden machines the used rack$pinon

Hey Willie, thanks for responding, When you say,''the engine was mounted up on the side'' do you mean, even with the cylinder shaft like a ''32'' or higher up? The machine I am trying to identify is not ground driven, but does have a flat belt pulley on the cylinder, it does line up as though the engine was mounted in front, but there is absolutely no indication of an engine ever being mounted there, may be time has erased any clamp marks. The wood sprocketing is a bigger mystery yet. Here is the Wisconsin that you spoke of, direct coupled through a clutch to the cylinder with the screw jack leveler in the left foreground and the side view of the unknown machine. Thanks; Tad
