I am going to install a prefilter on the fuel line for my D2 and thought this would be pretty straight forward. Not quite the case as there are a lot of different micron rating...flow ratings....spin on/throw away vs wire mesh options.
I can figure out the meaning of the ratings but the application for the D2 is what I need. I would hate to get one to restrictive yet having one not doing the job is not good either.
Does anyone have more knowledge than I about this and can help point me in the right direction.
Thanks............Bill

Hi Cysco,
You'd think it would be a simple task to select a pre filter but I have not found it to be so. The filter media is fairly straight forward with a 10 micron being fine enough to trap water and sediment without being to restrictive and they are readily available in spin on configuration for diesel.

I have fiddled with several filter heads and can't say I am happy with any of them so far. Yes, they will do the filtering but they are either to big or to small fitting wise and result in a Christmas tree of adapters & bushings. I like to run 3/8 in. hydraulic hose for fuel line and would like to find a filter head that has just the single in/out of that size or 1/2 in maximum. I'd also like a filter head that does not have a mounting bracket incorporated in to it as they usually dictate the flow direction which seems to always come out reversed from desired.

Maybe with enough eyes looking something will come up that is suitable😊 😊

I know of some wix bases with 1/2 pipe ports or I can probably find ones with 3/8 pipe ports that will accept a 10 micron filter water seperator spin on
If you post some specs I will try to find a part number IE filter height etc

Hi Old Magnet..........I can see it will be trial and error thing for the adapter head. I found a couple for sale with a 30 micron filter but am sure I can get any filter. Would you get one with a bowl on the bottom to see when it gets trash and water or is it just a waste of money and a potential area of leaking ? Does the flow rate have anything to do with choice ?

Hi Grizz....Thanks for the reply.....I can find a couple with those ports but as OM said the flow direction is where the problem is.....I guess just keep on looking till I find something........

Go to your Cat dealer as the little later tractors had the primary filters on them and you can adapt one on your tractor. Also over the road truck engines use them or did so check with a truck dealer parts dept. and they should have them too.You would have to get a couple fittings to hook it up but no big deal. Some later filters have a screw on element and the earlier ones had a screen type element in them to clean and reuse again. The Cat book I have shows a 1R-0769 for engines with space constraints but the screen type I don,t have a Cat number for one of them.

Considering what I had to pay for the last sock type fuel filters I bought it would make since to do everything to prolong the life of them. Or maybe I need to find a new after market filter sores. But considering what a hydraulic filter cost from a different sores, maybe it doesn't make any difference it just like fluid being filtered it costs more than it used to.But would still be very interested in what others are doing about fuel filters.

Cysco,
There sure are a lot to choose from......that Racor line has them with sight bowls, drain valves, heaters, priming pumps and lift pumps....pricey to.

I'd just as soon stay away from the plastic sight bowls with drains but I do have one cartridge that has a radiator type drain cock at the bottom of the filter can. Water has not been much of an issue for me but a separator feature is probably a good thing to have.

Flow requirements are not that big a deal to me as it is pretty small. I look to size more of a function of filter area and frequency of change. Those little 1/4 in. pipe size units may be fine on the lawn mower or furnace even if they make flow requirements but how often will they need to be changed? The other extreme is hanging a bucket sized unit or foot long cartridge in a confined space that looks like and is a total mismatch for the application.

The other challenge is thread size and flange dimensions between filter heads and cartridges. Seems easy enough to find various filter heads but then try and match a cartridge to it....not easy when they don't always give full dimensions. You also want to stick with filters rated for diesel as some of the filter medias (usually paper) are coated and not always compatible with other fuels.

As I mentioned before all the trucks that came into the Cat dealer to work on where I worked had the screen type primary filter on them and was the same one used on tractors.I retired the last of 1991 so not sure if they now use the screen element one or not now but the screen that was washble in the older ones worked well. The safe source book shows the element type filter for the late tractor engines and the part number I posted before was one of them.

Got to thinking....seeing how most everything on the market including Cat is pretty klunky, here is an opportunity for a nice little cottage industry making old Cat pre-filter kits, including the adapter to replace that goofy ferrule fitting in to the transfer pump. Seems a square or disc of aluminum and the required cartridge nipple would be all that is required to fab a unit....along with the machine tooling to get it done. I could use at least three of them myself😊 😊

Some may not approve but I replace damaged and leaking fuel lines with 1/2" fuel hose. I just cut the fuel line and the 1/2" hose fits tightly on the stock line and clamp it. It would be a simple matter to go to 1/2" barb fittings adapted to a filter
