Does anyone know when Cat upgraded the 3204 from a precombustion to a direct injection engine?

As I recall, both 3204 and 3208 were DI from the beginning.

The early non turbo 3204 engines were the pre-combustion chamber type with glow plugs. My manual shows both configurations, but does not mention the serial number cut off.

They switched at some point and turbo charged them at a later time also.

I've never seen a 3204 with pre-combustion chambers so it must have been
pre 1980's if they built them, only changes I know are with the fuel injection
when they went to scroll type in the mid 1980's.

943's were fitted with direct injection engines but the early 931 may have had
pre-combustion chambers, did have a 931 once as I recall it took more cranking to start it than the later 943, been running 943's for over 20 years!

It's definetely a 1970s engine. They were in the original D3 tractor and the 931 loader plus some others.

Thanks. That will help me out. I'm looking at a machine long distance and I can't figure out which engine is in it.

If you have a specific model I may be able to tell you at what serial number the change took effect.

That will be a precombustion chamber engine with the old scroll fuel system. Watch out for loose angle support at the back of the fuel pump and a cracked or broken fuel pump drive housing. You need a fixture to time the pump drive tang.
