general question, is there a place or someone that could decode a Cat serial number??

I have a 955 and have found the engine plate.. i can only make out 12A1379.. i believe there should be another two characters, but they are worn and i cannot make out anything of them..

any information on this number is appreciated...

thanks

Normally there are two places for serial numbers and that,s on the left rear side of the engine block below the head and the other on on the back housing above the drawbar. If the plates are missing the numbers are stamped in the casting between where the plate was riveted on.

hello rditz, the ex info on the tag want change yr built ,12a8418 was the last one made .if you are looking for track parts they change from d4 size track to d6 size tracks after serial number 12a 5792 ,cannot say if there were other changes ,someone else may have that info. if you buy manuals make sure they suit your serial number range, engine fitted to your 955 was d315 ,bruce oz

I cleaned off the back section of the loader and discovered a different serial number than the engine.

engine s/n is 12A1379

chassia s/n is 7U40773

can someone decode the chassis s/n??

i guess it is possible that the engine could have been changed.

thanks

All the different serial numbers mean is that the original back-end case which carried the same serial number as the engine has been replaced with a used one from a D4, 7U series machine, probably due to a back-end case failure .

Rditz, Did you post the engine and chassis just opposite from what you should have or maybe as was mentioned a rear housing was replaced some time and the SN is on it from the 7U tractor.

originally, i could only find the serial number on the engine. I believe that there are two digits that I cannot make out...

but then i found the one on the back...

what would the approximate year of manufacture be for a 7U??

which is more likely, rear housing change or engine change??

thanks
