The most common solution is to get the readily available D4/D6 glow plug chambers and rethread the nose to fit the D2.
Thanks O.M. i will pass that info on to him at the end of the week.(he's away planting cane). the standard d2 pre com thread size are they the same size thread as the direct electric start version, or a different animal all together? Do the d4/d6 pre com's get resized to the standard d2 tread size? Thanks Mike.
Whether glow plug style or not, the D2 pre-com has 1'' x 12 threads per inch where it screws into the head.
Correct, the D4/D6 pre-com chambers are 1-1/8 in.x 12 tpi.
lyoncat, I just went out and looked at mine and compared the two. It looks to me like you could have a machinist drill and tap the pre cups to accept the glow plugs without any trouble and of course you would have to route out the caps to accept the plug also. worth looking into.
Crazylegs, If you're suggesting to drill and tap the D2 non glow plug chamber, it's not possible... see attached pictures. The pre-com on the left is a glow plug style from a late D2 with direct electric start.... the one on the right is from an earlier D2 with pony engine start.
If you were suggesting to drill and tap a D4 pre-com after turning the threads down to 1'', I have no experience doing that.
Another alternative is to use the earlier non glow plug pre-coms ( availible from Cat for $ 127.00 ) and install a circulating type block heater for that first start in the morning.![]()
Thanks again OM, crazylegs, bcwayne. I'll print the thread and send it to him by snail mail (no computer for Joe around 70 years young ) and should answer all his questions. In between planting, harvesting, spraying, he also does most of the repair work on the local harvester's, crawlers, he had stated to me recently that he can still get me new D2 chains, berkco, and all ready has a set of pins/bushers for me. Might be worth a mention I thought. Thanks again Mike.
bcwayne, you are correct I was suggesting to drill the d2 precups. I was looking at mine they are still in the head without the injectors in them but with the caps on. I should have pulled the caps before I spoke. thank you for the correction.
