Eddie - You need to register to get into the ACME site .. its free, and straightforward, and you can do it here .. www.antiquecaterpillar.org/ (click on 'forum')

I'll wager you recognise some of these following pics then .. :D

1. & 2. This new bridge probably wasn't there, when you were .. but I'd say you'd recognise the others?? .. :)
RMK, an American consortium, put in the new Hwy 15 from Saigon to Vung Tau, in late 1970/early 1971. It was on a par with most American highways, and I hate to think how much it cost ..

3. Is this a pool you recognise?? .. :D

4. & 5. RMK Euclid hauling road base for Hwy 15, at the bridge ..

6. Our el-cheapo rebuild of Route 2, just NW of Nui Dat .. (well, after all, the Aussie Govt was paying for it .. :) ) ..

7. The Quarry at NDP Garth, on the Long Khanh border ..

8. Skycrane on the Kanga Pad, Nui Dat ..

9. This Bird Dog Cessna did a sunrise patrol of Route 2, past the Quarry at NDP Garth, every morning .. trying to catch VC planting mines .. and there was a sharp curve in the road right where the Command Post is, in the centre of the pic .. and I'll swear that wingtip nearly touched the road every morning as he banked ..

many changes in short time
1&2 yes that is the Eiffel bridge in question, along with the old concrete one, sure needed the new one to save time on the LC'Ms for heavy vehicles. Once bought a half loaded D Pull back from the Dat, screaming 4/71 GM sorted out the locals. No hint of a new bridge in my time.
3 yes thats the pool
6 us! never cheap, just penny pinching.
8 Big bugger isnt it, lots of wind with 6 odd ton on the hook.
Thanks for the heads up, have joined the site above. Many memories in photos from 17 Const RAEME site, used some photos from there in my dealings with DVA.

I'll tell ya a funny story about scrapers. We started off, hauling sand from the beach back to Nui Dat with the S7 Euclids (we went over to convoys of trucks later) .. and a mate went flying through a checkpoint at full speed in the S7 .. but the Nogs hadn't pulled the barbed wire coils back far enough.
He hooked a roll of Dannert wire in the cutting edge of the scraper, and started dragging it up the road behind him, bouncing it along happily, unbeknowns to Graeme ..

A Vietnamese cop went past in the opposite direction, and the flailing coils of Dannert wire, caught the front wheel of his step-thru Honda .. and sent him a**e-up, in heap on the road .. :BG:

He regained his composure, re-mounted the bike .. and set off in hot pursuit of Graeme .. but he couldn't get past the flailing coils of barbed wire .. so he does his best Vietnamese cop thing .. pulls out his .38 S&W .. and lets loose with a few rounds over Graemes head .. to sorta get his attention, I guess ..

At the sound of firing and bullets whisting overhead, Graeme was convinced that the largest proportion of the VC D445 Battalion was after him .. and made that ole Euc go so fast, the makers would have been amazed ..

After a while, the cop found a wider stretch of road .. and managed to get past the bouncing roll of wire .. and let Graeme know, with a .38 aimed at him .. that he REALLY wanted him to stop ..

Graeme got the message right about then, and did actually stop .. and the misunderstanding was completely solved .. and the wire removed and dumped by the roadside, much to the cops relief .. :D

On the bridge job the Militia used "M60 bursts over their heads crowd control" on any queue jumpers whilst the road was closed. We naturally thought we were under attack for repairing the bridge.
When transfering the D Pull back to Vungers I got to the twin bridges and promptly got waved to cross via the old concrete bridge, so as I headed for the bridge, up traffic side remember, the Milititia Guard in the tower lined me up with his M60, how fast can one get onto the floor plates whilst pulling the steering switch for right turn and with foot still firmly planted on the brake pedal, D Pull brakes never ever worked so good... he just wanted me to wait while he got permision for me to cross. The Plant Sargent was supposed to arrange this before I got there...SNAFU!.
