My name is John Gaunt, I live in Norfolk in the UK. I am 58 years of age, married with two 'grown up' sons, one is a veterinary surgeon, the other an accountant.
I retired 2 1/2 years ago from Mars, Inc. (The privately owned international food business, whose brands include Snickers, M&Ms etc.).
During my 32 years at Mars I worked in many different roles including Research and development, finance, customer services, logistics, IT support and latterly as a global IT project manager.
I also worked in and managed associates from many different countries including UK, Eire, France, Belgium The Netherlands, USA and Russia (where I lived, close to Moscow for 9 months!).
I still work for Mars part time as a trustee and director of Mars Pension Trustees Ltd., the Mars UK Pension Fund, which has assets of over $3billion.

During my many visits to the USA, I was priveledged to attend the Chillicothe rally near Peoria in 2000 and toured three Cat facilities as part of the 75 year celebrations. It was awe inspiring to visit the "Birthplace" of my Cat machines.
I have also met previous ACMOC president Jeff Huff on several occasions, and been priveledged to have a personal tour of his excellent "Vintage Tracks" museum.

My interest in Caterpillar equipment dates from my teens when I worked for a company which had a farm and contracting interests in the West Riding of Yorkshire. We had a range of machines from D2 up to and including several D8s and (Onions Empire) scrapers. Interestingly, I discovered last year that two of these D8's are now in Robert Wilson's collection (and 8R and a 15A), the Wilsons having bought them when the contracting business was wound up.
As time and space permitted, I have built up my own small collection of machines, mainly but not exclusively Caterpillar. These include R2 4J, D2 5J, D4 7J and D7 7M, as well as machines made by David Brown, Marshall and Ransomes. I also have a good selection of Ransomes trailer ploughs and cultivators.
I joined ACMOC Chapter 2 over 12 years ago and since I retired I have been more active in the club, becoming a director of Chapter 2 in 2007 and treasurer in 2008.
If successful in my desire to become the first non-US citizen to be a director of ACMOC, I will do my best to represent the interests of all the members of our club, whilst focussing specifically on those not based within the USA. I feel strongly that these members are not well represented by the current structure of the board.

My former employer Mars, Inc. and of course Caterpillar, Inc. are today major global organisations. Neither would have achieved such great success if they had been "Internationally Introverted", like I feel our club has been for much of it's history.
The wide international and business experience that I can bring to bear will help ACMOC become more international in it's outlook and membership.

As I'm sure many of you will want to know the face behind the words, I have attached a picture of myself presenting a framed "Certificate" of Appreciation" to one of Chapter 2's dedicated and enthusiastic members at a recent event which he organised. I'm the one on the right.

I strongly encourage you to "Write-In" your vote for me on the Ballot paper distributed in the latest magazine.

Unfortunately the Nominating Committee and the current Board of Directors saw fit to only officially present three candidates to you, so I must resort to this (unconventional yet modern !) way of presenting myself.

Finally, I am more than happy to answer any questions that readers of this thread may have.

Thanks John.
What a good idea to have a chapter 2 representative on the board. After all we are all one big association, being an ocean apart's no reason to not have members worldwide joining the management team, especially in this day and age of information technology.
If it transpires please don't concern yourselves toward my bias toward John. Lol Regards Gordon.

There was a post here this morning from Lee Sorbel, our President of the club. What happened to it? Where did it go? Why are things being covered up?-glen

John: If elected, will you publicly commit yourself to service on the board for the full three years of your term and also promise to the membership that you will attend all monthly board meetings on the telephone and one two-day meeting each year in person at Peoria, Illinois as well as the annual shows in Portland, Indiana next summer and then in Brooks, Oregon in 2011?

What ACMOC board committees are you interested in serving on?

Travel from the UK is expensive, but as already mentioned, there is a $500 US stipend available for both the Peoria spring meeting of the board each year and the annual show in the fall.

I would ask all future candidates to make a similar pledge.

I think it would be great if we could hold the club's annual show over in the UK in 2012. Would you head up that effort with Chapter 2?

Jim, (well, I think that it's Jim, but I'm a little confused as in the Magazine it shows Chapter 3 as being in Minnesota, where I believe you were Firechief yet on here it says Baltimore Maryland).

Firstly, I will publicly commit myself to serving on the board for a minimum of three years (possibly longer - a second term - if at that time I feel I wish to do so and our members support me). Of course this is subject to good health etc., but I don't expect that to be a problem.

Regarding monthly meetings, I am well used to telephone conferences (and video conferences for that matter), and I have no problem in joining them on a regular basis PROVIDING the time is suitable for all those concerned, i.e. not the early hours of the morning here in the UK ! Is it possible to get a 'toll free number' which works in the UK, otherwise my phone bills will rocket !
On this subject, I have found that working remotely through telephone (and video) conferences only really works well if you have met and formed a good working relationship with the other participants in advance. To this end, if I am successful, I would like to come over as soon as possible after my election (to Peoria ?) and meet up with as many of my fellow directors as possible as well as Tricia, Jenny and Kathy. I would come over for a minimum of a week as it's not really worth doing the long journey for less.

Regarding coming over for the 2 day meetings and ACMOC shows, I would for sure do this, I attended the Chillicothe event in 2000, and an event at Sharon Springs NY a few years ago. I flew into Chicago for the Chillicothe event and I see Portland Indiana is a similar distance from Chicago. I will also come to the Brooks Oregon event. I did spend a week in Portland Oregon a while ago. Whilst driving around, I came across an interesting museum like place which had a couple of old Diesel 75 logging tractors, I can't recall exactly where though.
Regarding committees, if you will advise me how many committees there are and what the purpose of each is, how often they meet etc. then I will be happy to indicate which one(s) I am interested in serving on.
Regarding travel, I am not independantly wealthy, and am now retired, living off a pension so help with my travel expenses would be much appreciated.

Finally, I have to say that I do like the proposal (made originally by Tom I believe) to have an ACMOC International show in the UK. This is something that the Chapter 2 committee will need to discuss and agree on. If, as I expect, the reaction were to be positive then I would, of course, be closely involved, and would provide the interface with the board (Is this what you mean by 'head up' ?). I do not personally have any experience of organising big events like this, but we do have members who do, and I would clearly look to them for their involvement.

I trust this answers your questions, if not then please seek further clarification.

Gordon with freinds like you John has lost my suport. I fail to see your your humor, you make it sound like members from the UK were never given the oppertunity to run for BoD or not allowed to. That is not the case if you look back in many past issues of our newletter or on this BB you will see that the cry went out many times for members interested in running for election for BoD and needing members to fill a quiters vacancy. and in most cases they didnt get any reponses and started calling and almost begging to take a place on the BoD. It wasnt long ago they needed someone to fill a vacancy and started calling around Tom Madden was first to turn then down and I'm not sure where I was on the list but I also turned them down and on the 17th try they got Don to agreed to it. If you look back just in recent yrs many of the BoD members wernt elected they we begged to come aboard, Don Dougherty Rick Keane,Ron Meeder( 2 times), George Howard all started on BoD by being begged to take some quiters place. That should show you that its not easy to find prospective BoD canidates and many arnt man enough to finish the job and few have left for other reasons, but in most cases they quit because they didnt like it when things didnt go their way and those are the guys who need to keep their mouth shut (beause when they had the chance to make a diff they ran) and let the men who were man enough to hang in there do there job.

Willie you need have a think. My post was in support for john. I fail to see how on earth anything i wrote could be misconstrude for for anything you suggested. Not withstanding the fact that my post was directed at chapter 3 and not you.
Only one line was tongue in cheek and i meant what i said.
Not one word of mine suggests that i refer to UK guys not being given a chance. I am not concerned with the politics because thats history. To say you have withdrawn your support for john because of my post .....ridiculous. For your information i am not johns friend. If he wants to stand for a position on the board then he has my support as offered OK. What is it with people ? i post my support for a fellow countryman and i get politics rammed down my throat or have i hit someones raw nerve ? in any event i dont need IT OK.

Gordon you need to stop being coy and acting as if you dont know for sure who Jim aka Chapter3 really is when you know full well who he is. You need to read his intire resume and not be selective and only pic parts to suit you and your agenda. It states very clearly that Cheif Clack was incident comander in Mineapolis during the bridge collapes disaster and that he also started Chapter 3 in Minn. With friends like you John sure dosn't need any enemies because you are for sure not helping his cause

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
