How hard is to convert a D6 9U crawler to a dozer. I have a D6 9U dozer needs quite a bit of work and have a found a crawler worth the money. I was told you have to switch the nose over and front hydrualic system, and the linkage for the blade control. Is this is easy as it sounds?

do you have any pictures???? it will be alot of labour involved. the hardest part will be removing the blade pivots on the side of the track frame over. they get welded plus the bolts get a licking for being down in the dirt.

The dozer package usually used the large (27") front idler which requires a track change from 39 to 40 link.....also often used the heavy duty front spring or even better would be the optional solid front equalizer bar (if you can find one). A lot of grunt work but it is all interchangeable. If you a making a wish list you would also want the oil clutch.

I have D6 9u with small idler and light spring, someone before me added a hardnose and a strait blade.I use to worry that something would brake .Had no trouble with any of this in 25 plus years. But it is used much more as a farm
tractor than as a dozier. But I don't baby it either when digging rock or brush.

The crawler is from out west, has direct start, turbocharger, and cab. Do i have to use the hydrualics from my dozer so the blade control lever will be the same? Thanks JJ

Hi, JJP.
All of the above advice is pretty good. One question if I may. (You aren't here to stop me so here goes.) If your current D6 9U needs a lot of work and you have a possible replacement tractor, have you given any thought to making the other tractor a 'donor' for spares for the dozer, assuming that it is not a case of the whole tractor needing replacing.

With direct electric start, turbo and cab, there is a possibility that the other 9U may be an agricultural crawler. This does not mean that you can't put your dozer on it but it may have different gearing from your current machine.

If you do go through with switching your dozer over to the other tractor, I'd recommend switching the lot, lock, stock, both barrels and everything else as well. If your current dozer has the large front idlers and the tractor doesn't, switch them too. As Old Magnet said, this would involve adding a link to the track chains on each side but it is WELL worth the effort. He was spot on about the oil clutch being desirable too.

I don't wish to discourage you at all but it might also be worth bearing in mind that these things are seldom as straight forward as they would appear on paper. Murphy's Law - if something can go wrong, it WILL.

PHOTOS, man. If you go ahead with it, we want photos. LOL.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks for the info. My dozer needs an engine overhual top to bottom as far as i can tell, and it has been used and abused pretty hard. The under carriage is pretty decent but missing two top idlers, hood, clutch cover etc. Zimmerrmans Here in Missouri told me about switching an ag crawler to a dozer and they told me them have done quite a few of them and it works out very good so thats what i thought might be best. Also my pony engine has a bad crank so i wanted to switch to direct start but i have to do the whole bell housing machining project. All these issues are making me lean towards the ag crawler to dozer switch. Thanks JJ

I have an easy solution, I have a d6 9u cable machine that I will be cutting up tomorrow, had it on ebay but no one was interested. So with the price of scrap going up i've decided to scrap it. I could put a package together with everything you would need,
(winch, tube, front pulleys, hardnose, blade, arms, trunion bars and h.d. main spring ). Allcould be loaded on your trailer. But I'll need to know a.s.a.p
because its slated to go quick.

What condition is the engine in? and what would you take for the whole machine?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
