For those of you who want Kroil that is talked about so much, go to Google and type in Kroil Oil where to buy. A pop up menu will display where to call to get a deal direct from Kano Labs that make the stuff. You can get two cans for $12.00 with free shipping. Mention that this is the Google deal. I just got my second two cans, so I guess that you can use this deal more than once. It is really great stuff. John

The Kroil google offer

Over on the machinery site they conducted a test and Kroil came out on top of the commercial products but a home brew mixture of 50/50 cheap ATF and acetone was slightly better as a penetrating oil.

Very interesting...

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

I don't know. I'm not that surprised about the PB. I bought a can of PB blaster some years back and other than foaming alot, it didn't seem to do much else for me to loosen rusted stuff. Liquid wrench was always what I went for until discovering Kroil a few years ago. This ATF/Acetone info is something I want to try. I just bought a set of new D2 rails that are rusted stuck in a coil. I sprayed all the pin/bushings with Kroil over the weekend and several of the links are moving now, which is really good news. I want to try this ATF mix to see if it works better.

I have been using kroil for quite sometime and have had very good results. The only drawback is the price, but if it works then it well worth it.I will give the atf/acetone mixture a try.Where would you go about buying acetone?

You can usually find acetone in the paint section of a hardware store, gallons and quarts.

Would have been interesting to see how this one does, it's an industrial strength, seems to work well in many instances, but like all, no miracles for the most part, it was retailing here for $9/ spray can, only 3 places I know carries it.

Those results are spreading far and wide but mean little. I have the original article. He put 1/4 inch pins in 1/4 inch holes and let them rust for 12 hours. The pins were originally "finger tight" which does not by it self make sense. A 1/4 inch dowel would not be finger tight in a 1/4 inch hole. The 12 hours of rusting was able to increase the finger tight dowels to over 500 lbs of resistance. Hard to believe for only 12 hours of rusting. The home made mix was actually power steering fluid not atf. The kroil may be good but I would not base any decisions on this article. No statistics were actually given and it appears he only used 3 dowels per test. Likely not a valid study.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
