Hi 3512, A little off topic but this might apply to some mobile equipment.
I'm a Waukesha guy but I keep getting stuck working on Cats. I've got
a 3512 ta Diesel gen set with a city water cooled heat exchanger. On
warm up and shut down the expansion tank pressure exceeds the 7#
cap and will spit out about 15 gal. (80 gal system) The entire cooling
system gets pretty heavily aireated. I'll double check the w/pump
impeller but I don't suspect and problems there. The pump outlet pressure
was around 20psi. The t-stats are new and the heat. exc has been cleaned.
there were no signs of exhaust gas in the cool. system. My next step
is to check the pressure drop across the oil cooler and figure out a way
to pressurize the after cooler. This has been a problem the past 4 months
and seems to get gradually worse. Have you seen this before? Any other
ideas? I didn't make a whole lot of headway with Michigan Cat on getting
specific pressure ratings.

All most forgot, good picture . Here in Michigan the DNR has laws against that.

I made up some simple testing equip. at the dealer I worked for & used it dozens of times & it really helped to pin down problems.First you need an air pressure gauge & an air line shutoff & of course an air supply. In the system somewhere a plug should be handy to remove & couple up the air supply to the cooling system at the plug.If you find a plug high in the system you won,t loose much coolant but then after the air supply is hooked in the system fill the system back up full & set the pressure gauge at about 15 PSI & this pressurizes the system & shut the air supply off. Shutoff needs to be before the gauge so you can observe the leak down & if it leaks down fairly fast you know you have a coolant pressure leak so start checking out if there is any leaks. Also it might help to remove the injection spray nozzles so you can check down on top of the cylinders.A 7 lb. cap seems a little low for the system so I,d think a 12 or 14 lb. is more what it should be but check with your Cat dealer for sure. You could have a prechamber leaking or could be a head gasket going too but try the air test & see what shows up.This test procedure worked for me about 9 X out of ten & saved time & money for the customer.I didn,t check close enough that you have a 3512 so it would have direct injection but the units still can be removed to check down inside.

3512B,

That's an interesting photo, is it a photoshop, or the real deal?

Do you know anymore about it? Where, looks like the forest around me, but i'm told Finland is also much like northwestern Ontario.

Neat photo anyway. I recall seeing some old photos from someone in Manitoba that used moose in place of horses to pull a buggy, but not for logging.

I'd bet you'd have to train that critter from a calf to keep him tame and workable. :)

Ken

I got to thinking overnight I forgot to tell you that the cap has to be sealed so the pressure will build up to the 12 to 14 lb. pressure or otherwise it won,t tell you much with the lower pressure cap.I don,t know quite what you have as a cap but you,ll have to figure something out to seal it or a different cap.

Thanks SJ, I'm trying to get some air out there. The unit is at a water
pump station. Everything got gutted when the plant went automated electric.
I also forgot to mention the exhaust dumps into the old boiler 100ft smokestack, so I have no idea what the exhaust looks like.
The system is rated at 7#. They are having a 3516 being installed and it is
also 7#. I've got a 13# I'll try for testing.
