I found a D2 that has been sitting for I guess 10 years outside. Had blackberries growing totally around it. All you could see was the home made canopy top. I knew it was a CAT though. It is a 5U 11000 something serial #. Stacks were covered but tin cans had small rust holes so maybe some water got in. Has a straight blade.

Anyway it has a Carco winch on it. I would like to see if the guy will sell the winch or the whole machine for parts (Shot U/C, slightly open tranny to weather but under canopy, bad steering clutch, pony frozen).

Does anyone have any advice about these winches? It is a model A and apparently a single control. Control lever moves back and forth so maybe unit is not full of water.

What would the winch be worth if not scrap?

It has a factory electric start pony, and factory hydraulic unit too.

What would someone offer for the whole machine, ballpark?

You can try offering scrap metal price. You are looking at 10,000 - 12,000 pounds. Scrap price varys. Some months back when scrap prices were up high I took a load of mixed metal and got $8 a hundred. You will have to deal with the expense of moving a dead machine, so factor that into your price. It may be junk to the owner. If you really want the machine, then don't insult the seller. Hit with a price you think is fair and makes you feel good about the deal. The blade and winch, along with the factory add-ons like the pony start are a good find.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
