I have enclosed some pictures of the progress I am making on cleanup and repair of my Cat D2 5U. The undercarriag is quite rusted and I am debating taking the tracks apart and removing the rails to blast and paint
Let me know what you think and if there is something you see that may need attention.
There is also a picture of a damaged dozer c-frame bushing and a crack at one of the pin holes. The crack is only on the top. Any thoughts on repairing. I am thinking cleaning ,V-groove and fill with weld. Rod size and type ?
Does anyone know where I can get the bushing ?

Groove out the crack almost to the bottom and then weld the groove up with 1/8" 7018 rod. Bushing will probably have to be made. Material is available fro McMaster-Carr Co. They have an on-line catalog. John

Always preheat meatl when using 7018 and make sure metal is clean.

Thanks Old Parker......I have that rod and will give it a try. I will also check that catalog for the material to make the bushing. One thing though are those press in bushings or do they just slide on ? The reason I ask is the other side just slid right out and is whole.

Hey Cysco, The bushing is a press fit, removable bushing. I didn't tell you that you had to clean the weld area prior to welding as I fhought the grooving of the metal would clean it out, and common sense would tell a welder not to use 7018 on dirty or rusty metal. If such was the case, I would recommend 6010 in the dirty areas as it digs in much more than the 7018. Good luck with your project. John

OLDPARKER.....I have been removing parts and either sandblasting or wire brush on a grinder to clean off all the old paint, rust, etc. The metal will be clean for sure. I am not an expert welder but I will ask the "dumb" questions to make me smarter.... 😊
The bushing material I am at a loss for. I went to the website you recommended and really didn't know what I was looking for and then there are the correct dimensions which I don't have.......doesn't anyone make that bushing anymore ?

Hey Cysco, I'm not positive what the bushiong material is on those pivots, but I would guess that they are bronze. Looking at your pictures seems to indicate that also as it is a different color than the hole it is in. If Cat can't order you a bushing, then you will have to have one machined. McMaster-Carr has the material you need. Go to their website and look up "wear resistant bronze oversize tubes" or "bronze oversize tubes". They come in all sizes up to 6" with a 3" hole. Pick out the one that has enough material for the machining and go for it! Good luck.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
