This is just a few shots of some of the bangers i have been working on this month included in this are 2 CAT D6R transmissions, my record for doing one of these with the help of another fitter is 6 hours from draining the oil, rebuilding the gearbox then starting it up and driving it onto a lowloader. The LGP tractor also suffered an engine fault (knackered turbo). The pick of the dump trucks is about 10 parked up in the hire yard needing repairs, in the heap of dumpers was CAT 730s, VOLVO A25/A30 and TEREX TA30s each one needing an amount of work to get ready for hire. The D8R is now nearly completley stripped to a bare casing, only the draw bar remains on (until wednesday) this is a tractor that i have been asked to rebuild, next to this tractor are the engine drivers living waggons, one of them is fitted with wheels from a second world war tank. There is also a few pics of a chassis modification i am doing for a customer to enable the fitting of a crane complete with draw bar pull hook, this entailed drilling 396 bolt holes; finally a few shots of a load or two i've driven this month, the load with the wooden crates would total 70,000 kgs (156,800 lbs) it is loaded on a Cometto trailer built in northern Italy, this trailer builder made the trailer that hauls your space shuttles about (the bit that returns back to earth). The lowloader has a running clearance from the ground of 4 inches (100 mm) this trailer is built by a dutch firm Nooteboom and this load is destined for Antwerpe docks (Belgium).

COMING SOON

Hi Tractordon , in the pics of the 2 high-drive's with the speed box's to repair, did you notice the little pump truck and a rachet strap used to remove the knackered bit, also the work bench, 2 oil drums with a bit of scrap wood , this is as good as it gets with this Company they have nothing in the workshop hardly to help with any repair to any-thing , they also run 1200 items of kit ,????

hey tc

that looks like a chip conveyor in the last pic, and most likely a machining center under the tarp, do you know where it comes from/goes to?

I like the pics of that stripped D8, we are restoring a 2U, and I'm glad we did not have to go that far because it was in very good condition.

keep them good pics coming!

best regards
marcel

Replied by tctractors on topic Well spotted Cel,
Yes that is a swarf/chip conveyor, also a medium speed machine center under the sheet Cel, its delivery address was to Haven van Antwerpen 1007, (Antwerp Docks No 1007, from this storage yard it would have been sent onward to anywhere in the World, this machine weighed little , at most 16,000 kgs ,the load that was transported back was about 55,000kgs plus the lorry and trailer, Antwerp is a common trip for this Co, weekly they would average 6 trailer loads on abnormal permits (STGO) of all sorts of machine centers and press/punch kit, they import it into England / Ireland, then install it into the Factorys, I have done my fair share of this work, it always means long hours, with lots of graft, this Co' has a fair fleet of very powerfull fork trucks called Versa-Lift, these things are built in the U.S.A. (Baldwin City) they are mostly fitted with a "Riggers Boom" also some have winches fitted, these things make life a lot more easy now.

<span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS">TC,

The mechanical intrigue is striking me over that D6 transmission, having never worked on anything yellow I am dying to know whats inside.
Looking at the pic of the pulled gearbox it looks as if its a simple planetary gear pack with a centrally driven input driving back out the hollow shaft [or other way around perhaps].....driving to what? At a guess I would say to the the black dead shaft inside, yes? Is that all there is between the flywheel & the rear axle or am I thinking too simplistic?

Just interested, coz the gearboxes I usually see have either blue or red & black paint on them.

cheers
Richard

Replied by tctractors on topic Easy Gears,
Richard, You are basicly bang on , 2 big shafts running with an arrangement of gears , which are selected using oil to hold plates together to stop an outer internal toothed ring gear (anulus) spinning freely making the inner gears turn, transmitting drive to the planet gears, the D6R power-shift is about as simple as things come, the hardest job is draining the oil from the back end , even this is easy, it helps if there is a tall lanky sort handy , to reach in from the back to un-clip 4 plug connectors that are a stretch to reach inside the case, these wires go to pick-up sensors that are set on exciter rings, as this g/box is worked primarily with electrical mag valves to move oil valves to select speeds/direction, the best thing I can do is take some good pics when I rip the next one to bits , I had a call off a Co, on Monday about a tractor that is banging as it changes from forward to reverse, so i will see if it needs to be "IN LOTS OF BITS", as this would be a good chance for you to have a poke around inside, as I dont think I have the best ability to explain things in class-room style.
all the best tctractors.

Hello TC, the company with 1200 machines i pressume is Orford ?
I was under the impression that they had gone bust. I have heard some sad stories about Orfords, some pretty inexperianced site management mostly. I must say there was alot of pictures of the boss recieving new kit over the last two years....seemed to expand very quickly....into oblivion maybe ?
Whos' yard has that many old living vans in it ? the look pretty good nick..sure better than those tin tents we have to follow eveywhere in the summer Lol.... Regards Gordon.

Firstly Gordon, yes it is Orford Plant, also they always seem to have heaps of new kit turning up , last time I was there 30 new CAT mini diggers were dropped off (3 lowloaders full ) they recieved a few stickers on the arm , then sent out to work, Down the pan they may have been ???? but they just kept on working as though nothing was happening, loosing about £3,000,000 (what is that in $$$$ ????) of Debt, mainly to the Tax Man,
The yard with the living vans is S.E.Davis's at Astwood Bank, I have pulled a CAT D8R from the 1940's into a bare casing with David Moggerage, sadly he took a nose dive in the ice, damaging his already Knackered hip, after a visit to the Vets, he tends to think that the day has come to wipe his spanners off for the last time, he is 69 years old and at 6'4" tall he hits the ground with a good thud and no bounce, so the 8R is on hold for a bit, till things become more apparent,
Martyn I saw the article in the mag of your scrap yard ( I sent a copy to the Taffland Town Hall in the hope they might like a read????) and yes I will se you all at the Malvern Ding Dong, and look forward to the sight of G.B.H.
I aint half been busy, tctractors.
