What does a heat plug do in those pistons that have them? Initiate fuel burn? cool piston? protect the hottest spot on the surface?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

My understanding is that they were a heat transfer and anti erosion device to deal with the high velocity, high temperature combustion gases being discharged from the pre-combustion chambers. The plugs are located directly under the pre-com "target" and were an aid to avoiding burning holes in piston tops.

Thanks! So obviously not seen on pistons of modern engines.
