Anyone know where to find the serial number on a Holt 10 ton with no tags? Also was the KW HK(highbar) magneto used on this machine up through the end of production or was another mag used after early 1920?

Thanks,
Grant

Hi Grant, looked through the books I've got that cover the 10 ton and it appears the KW high bar was used through atleast 1920 although the 5 ton had started using the Eisemann G4 about that time. My thoughts are the 10 ton started using the Eisemann G4 shortly there after(I think I've got one if you need one :0) ) Sometime towards the end of the production run the word Caterpillar was added to the top of the radiator and Holt went down the side panels(shortly before the merger)a grill was also added in front of the radiator cores much like the later 2 tons had. Without the brass tags you will need a 1925 or newer parts book wich covers all the serial #s for the 10 ton and then go through all the design changes to give you an approximate build date only. I could be wrong but to my knowledge the 10 tons were not stamped with a serial # other than on the brass tag on the front of the frame just below the radiator. The engine should have a brass tag with a # stamped at the very rear, that # will not be the same as the tractor serial # but could also help date it when compared with other tractors and assuming the engines have not been swapped.Hope this helps a little.
