I'm doing a direct start conversion on a D2 per OldMagnets instructions.... I just received the alternator conversion from CME in Florida... but it comes with no wiring diagram. It may be easy and straight forward, but there are a couple of terminals on it that I didn't expect.
The alternator is a 24 volt, 40 amp Prestolite/ Leece-Neville.
It has 4 connection points on the rear: In the 8 o'clock spot is one marked with a positive symbol.... in the 4 o'clock spot is one marked with a negative symbol.... in the 9 o'clock spot is one marked REG..... in the 3 o'clock spot is one marked AC TAP....
I had thought I was buying a " one wire " alternator... Any thoughts ?? Thanks, Wayne

I tried to find your alternator on prestolite's web site, but they don't list it. You might try going to prestolite.com and see if you can find a schematic that would work for you.

You can connect the positive and ground to the ones marked + and - (obviously) If it won't excite just like that, connect a switched wire from BAT + to the regulator terminal. You can use either an ignition switch or an oil pressure operated switch (find one used to run an hour meter). Or if you will use a battery disconnect, you can just jumper over from the + terminal on the alternator to the regulator terminal. Opening the disconnect will break the ground connection so the full time connection won't matter.

Sometimes a tachometer uses the AC output as a reference. I don't know what else someone might need the AC tap for. We have a couple of Delcos with an AC tap beside the normal regulator 2 prong plug)
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Hi Wayne,
Was thinking Motorola the other day but actually meant Leece- Neville (known in the trade as "loose naval")
This is as close as I could get for a wiring diagram....actually out of their marine series. Should work fine with that 4-pole disconnect switch I recommended.

Thanks guys for the excellent info.... I'll commence stringing wires this morning, but can't test run it until the end of the week cuz I'm waiting for an ammeter to arrive.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
