One of the former Directors of ACMOC told me the story of when he was a kid living near Capron Ill and walking to school in the winter. When walking home he came upon a D-8 owned by the owner of Bowman Dairies in Harvard Ill plowing the road so the trucks could get to the farms to pick up the milk. He was quite impressed with the machine. It might be what started him on Cat equipment.
The county where drujinin and I live used to plow with Cat 60's back in the
1930s and early 1940s. My Grandfather was the first person the County hired to work on the roads about 1910. Not much on snow removal at that time. After WW1 they used a lot of Nash Quads, Oshkoshs, and FWDs and of course crawlers, mostly Cats. They did have a Allis with a V plow that I remember. My Dad started there full time after WW2, he worked summers before that, until he retired. They both moved a lot of snow in their days.
My snow moving equipment is stored not far from drujinin's place. Yesterday when I was cleaning my driveway, I thought it would be nice to have the Oshkosh out and push some snow with it.

Thanks for reminding me that your snow removal equipment is nearby. Its way below zero today so are you going to come and plow my driveway and the old lady at the Farm near town so I don't have to go out in the cold?
HA! HA!
Yes, even out in NYS where I grew up the guys would tell stories about riding in the back of Town dump trucks shoveling sand out onto the roads before they had mechanical spreaders.

Here in CT last week there was the threat of 12" of the white stuff and they shut school for the day, and the state sent workers home at 10 am. I plowed with the old stand-by cat 930 with 11' plow. Nice and warm in that cab. I only cursed for a few minutes when the dam thing jelled up from not having treated fuel in it. That problem was been solved with the special bottle of juice. Ron is on his way to having the snowiest winter ever. Tried to clean up with skidsteer, need chains for that. Side note to George, when you retire, I thought you were suppose to move to warmer and sunnier climates. Sound like same old as in NY.

Well we got about another foot of snow and wind. The snow was pretty wet and heavy and then it got cold. So it was pretty hard pushing. Glad I bought this D4 I would have been out there forever on a D2. This D4 will push as much snow in 3rd gear as the D2 would push in first. No rooting around just drop the blade and go. It seems that the D2 has plenty of power, but it doesn't weigh enough. The old D4 only spun twice. The cable blade and I are coming to understand each other better to.
When i first got it going this morning, the brake was froze to the drum. I had to get out the 2 pound ice remover.
But is wasn't any worse than hydraulic oil below zero. All in all pretty pleased with it. I didn't get any pictures. I've been hastling with my computer it crashed the day before yesterday and I just got it running again.

drujin (sorry, can't remember how it is spelled). My mother's family lived in the Town of Allegany on the back Five Mile. The only family member still living there is my cousin Louis Ensworth. Across from the Potter sawmill.
Have been in a warm climate for the past week and one-half. Will be returning to cold Denver on January 1st. God willing.
