I figured I would ask here, ya'll know more about this than I ever could. I am about to put my dozer up for sale and wondering what a fair price would be. I am going to get some better pics of it this weekend. It is far from pretty, but runs good. Have no problem starting it in 30 degrees. 2 new 12 volt batteries, new air filters, freah oil and filter change and final drive gear oil change. I would not know how to rate hte mechanics of it, but it is well used.
I was thinking of asking 5k for it and going from there?
Here is the thread where I was asking details about it:

It is a d4c 40a, have gotten conflicting views on the year, but is between '61 and '65

Here is one on eBay for $3K but the photos are so poor one cannot tell a thing about it.

Lack of paint on yours doesn't mean diddly squat but the condition of the rollers, sprockets, idlers, tranny, clutches, engine etc make all the difference in the world.

Value in this case largely depends on the condition of the undercarriage. In the link to the former discussion, there was no mention of the uc condition. You need to show a closeup photo of the undercarriage so we can see for ourselves how much "meat" is left in the links, the condition of the sprockets. You might also offer a written description of them. Do you know how to measure for wear? (Most folks don't, although here on this bb many do.) GWH

As has been said, mechanical condition counts for a lot. Then it boils down to how much you think it's worth (original cost + how much you put into it) when someone wants to buy. This might or might not be what the buyer thinks its worth so then the haggling starts.

A few years ago I bought a 3J for $500 as a parts machine. .it ran but had a broken steering clutch. I used the hyrdaulics off it for my other 3J and finally got tired of seeing it sit. I finally got tired of seeing it just sit, took it apart and found the r/h steering clutch yoke had broken. Got another one, put it back together and someone came along and just had to have it. He offered $1500, I didn't argue and he drove it off.

I guess value is a determination of what the seller thinks an object is worth 😊 versus what a buyer thinks it's worth😮 . Then the fun starts 😆

I understand the wear being a determining factor. I do not know how to judge the wear as I do not know exactly how everything looked new. I have seen some with way less sprocket, pin and such than mine has still operating fine.
I have 2 offers of 4k so far, and might be willing to let it go for that, but would have to sit on it a little longer first. I will post up some more pics in a while.

If you don't need to sell it, tell each buyer you have someone else interested and bump it $500 or $1000 as you initially planned on and run the risk of loosing both of them.

From my limited experience $4000 seems to be on the upper end of what I have seen an average wear D4 tractor sell for. I paid less for mine and believe I probably paid too much. You are surely above scrap price as it sits now.

You need to know what you have to set the price and educate the buyer. He may educate you too. It sounds like you went through and recently change fluids, filters, and ramped up the cranking power with new batteries. That ought to be worth something unless it covered underlying problems. No accusations here, just looking at it from the perspective of the buyer. You might want to be prepared to answer a question along those lines.

Search this site for a thread on undercarriage by Old Magnet. He spent some real time with photos and narratives. You may be able to make some real good comparisons.

If each is willing to pay $4000 cash "as-is where-is" I would suggest they intend to build from what you have and not put the cutting ax to it. If that means anything to you. Maybe going overseas..who knows.

Good luck, a buyer and a seller who are happy to walk across the street to say hello to oneanother, after the deal, means a lot. Often times we don't think of that, before the deal.

Let's see those photos-

I dont have my book here but I believe your 40A D4 is a D4C model which is kind of desirable.

With a Cat, undercarriage is almost everything as far as value is concerned. This site guves the specs. You can carefully measure things and come up with the percentage life available.

Bump, added a few recent pics. Have not had time to measure anything. I have it for sale locally as 5k obo and have gotten quite a bit of interest. I have not been home enough to show it to but 1 person yet.

Nevermind, sold it last weekend. I think I undervalued it, I got 20 calls a day or so until I could get the paper to cancel the ad. First person that called bought it.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
