Hi my name is Bob and I am from NY. A couple months ago I found a 1965 Cat D6 for my Father. He honestly has no idea how to even turn a computer on so when he tells me to find something I do what I can. Anyway he really wants the parts and service manuals for his machine for Christmas. My question is what are the correct manuals? I have found one site and called and I am still waiting to hear back from them. www.ssbtractor.com/tractor_manual_displa...?m=Caterpillar&o=D6C . They have the correct manuals for the crawler but do the manuals cover the hydraulics for the blade or is that a separate book? He would also like the stickers which I was able to get from the H.O. Penn dealer. The serial number is 76A2*** if that helps at all. Thanks for any replies. Since I am a member of several truck forums I know you arent allowed to post without pictures.

You see machines in the background because I took that picture at the yard where we bought it. It completed a job since and has already been moved to another job so I dont have any other pictures right now.

The cat dealer can get you the manuals you need, or if the parts guy is a moron, you can get them here.
Caterpillar Legendary Service Literature
Midland Press
1-800-228-7821
fax 1-319-355-3690
You give them the machine model and serial number. They will tell you what is available. Probably you would want the Operation and Maintenance Guide, Serviceman's Reference Book, and the Parts catalog.
The seperate components have their own serial numbers and arrangement numbers , that would be smart to record as well. There are seperate books for the fuel pumps, hydraulic groups, even the blade and attachments.
Ebay is another good source of manuals.
Midland Press' are original quality reproductions, not photcopies like many of the repro manuals are. Avoid Jensales manuals for that reason.
Most of Midlands/Cat manuals are about $50 and printed in 8.5X11 to be easier to read. Good information is the best investment when it comes to dealing with the old stuff.
Looks like you got a nice cat there, the D6C was always one of my favorites. Turbo D333 engine, powershift? Looks like a Fleco canopy with sweeps on it.
Tilt cylinder?
You can post without pictures here, you just won't be as popular!
Hope this helps,
Alan627b

Alan, did'nt Cat take the manual publications back from Midland, I had spoken to both years back regarding manuals and this site/club about some ideas to be helpful to ACMOC, fell on deaf ears, but anyway, they published a master list of all the books they offered under the new Legendary Literature Program, most of the books were $50 at that time, think it was '04, do agree the print quality is good compared to the other spiral bound photocopies offered at higher prices, by people like Jensales and others, some even had typos right on the cover, yet they wanted $75 for them. I've got a midland press serviceman's reference book for a D-8800 engine, not bad at all, it has the CAT logo in the back. The new books under the legendary literature program, were also supposed to be 8 1/2" x 11", unlike the older size of 6"x9".

I would agree, e-bay seems to be a good source for decent used originals, I've found good original books there for every old piece of equipment, and truck I own, always worth looking.

Billy,
I thought the manuals from the Midland Press are the same ones the dealer will get you, but I couldn't say for sure. The adress I use has both the Legendary Manual program and the Midland Press name on it, it's a printed label from the manuals I got. MP told me they printed the manuals for Cat, and I ordered them from my dealer instead of ordering direct from them, as the Cat dealer is 10 minutes from here....no shipping!
Mine are still the old size, I hear the new ones are the bigger ones. Even better! Easier for old guys like me to read!!
Print quality was great on mine.
Another possibility for used manuals is the CatUsed department at the dealers, they sell manuals from machines they part out sometimes.

Any of these methods should get you what you need, Bighead! Just pay close attention to the serial number coverage. Newer books are still good to have, they show the updates and upgrades. A good deal if cheap enough.
