kinda new to this site...bought the D4 today..serial no..6051..first pony motor has no spark..could be a magneto problem..turns over freely thou....the other problem is the left clutch...at the auction they thought it was out..or sticking..the lever does not snap back like the right one..i took the two rear covers off..and compared the two..on the right side the working clutch the two dogs that operate the clutch where aligned and tight against each other..on the left the dogs where not align..i could move the dog that is attach to the clutch and move it up and down..there was no tension holding the dogs together...is this a sticky clutch or am I looking at teardown...

Congratulations!

Hope it works out well, but I expect the problem you describe with the clutch will require a tear down. It's possible you will see some problems with the linkage and clutch release yoke that could be fixed without removing the clutches. Good news is the clutches come out the top of the D4 housing as compared to the D2 where the finals have to come off to get at them. But not as nice as the D6 where each side unbolts and lifts out independently.

You need to get a parts book and/or a serviceman's reference book for the D47U tractor covering your serial number.

How did the D6 and D7 prospects you mentioned earlier work out?

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

thanks for the reply, after more research it seems i have the opposite problems of everyone else, my clutch is stuck in the disengaged position, while many others are stuck engaged from sitting for a long time in that position. it seems as if ours was free moving and then stuck open when they moved it for the first time in a long time. i have been not able to find a diagram to show if it is sticking on the shaft or more likely the splines on the drum, would it be possible to pry to engage it and try to work it loose. if it sticks i am in the same boat anyway. anyone have any luck soaking the whole clutch pack will in the dozer with, diesel or oil or some magic penetrating oil. thanks for any help

ccjersey...the d-6 is located 220 miles away..it has been hard to get someone to go take a look at it again who has the cat knowledge to help me make a decision...offered the guy a lower price...wont take it..

the d-7 was suppose to sale today at the sale...but had issues trying to get it started...seemed to be locked up...had electric start..done just this year..its a 1944 year model..hyd...electric..good track...leaking final drives..anyway he finally got it started..offered $8000..said he had to think about it..the D-4 came up on the auction...ended getting the D-4...D-7 fella called tonite said he would take the $8000..dont need both dozers...so I am told him I had already bought the D-4...I know the D-7 is a lot more dozer than a D-4...but cost was 75% less...and the 4 will work for me on the farm with terrace and waterway repairs....

sidehill,
If the lever moves back and forth, the problem is more than likely where the yoke and bearing slide. .or don't. You might be able to reach down and pry it into engagement. If it does engage it's a matter of working it back and forth to loosen it up. Another place that seems to be a bugaboo is the bearings in the bell crank as they tend freeze up due to lack of oil.

If you decide to dump some diesel in the clutch compartment, don't dump in more than enough to reach part way up the clutch pack. The reason for that is usually the seals in the bevel gear compartment are worn over the years and the diesel will wind up in the transmission. Take the inspection plate off the rear of the tranny to check the level of diesel that you dump in. That's also a good place to try to pry from.

Hopefully you can get it working again. .otherwise it's time to pull the transmission lid, bevel gear housing and shaft complete with both clutches out. It's not too bad of a job. .just heavy stuff to deal with. ccjersey is right, you do need the Serviceman's Reference book. You can get the reproduction from Cat. .it'll be around $50 but well worth it.

Sidehill6600 - The oil tank on top of the hood is an additional oil reservoir, for when you're running a towed item such as a Cat #40 scraper. The additional oil capacity is necessary to operate the scraper hydraulics. Caterpillar called it a "surge tank".

Oz,
Don't know where you get your information from but that surge tank is not an additional oil reservoir. It provides the air cushion capacity to accommodate large cylinder volumes when near the capacity of the #44 unit. If you actually ran one of these you would know how it works. The cap is not vented and if you ran an oil level in the tank with the cap vented it would belch oil everywhere.

hey guys...thanks...so just running the dozer blade alone.I do not need the surge tank.????..it has hyd lines running to the back of the dozer..for a scraper I guess...I was just wondering if I could remove the tank as I am only going to be using the dozer blade..old magnet you thumbnail seems to indicate that... I really appreicate your advice and help..
