In California,
I am getting to fill my tank (600 gal) as the prices begin to drop. There is talk/rumors about additional taxes for fuel. Anyone know if and when this may occur?...sl

The only fuel that I am aware of that has red dye in it that pertains to fuel tax is Diesel fuel. Here locally you can get either No. 1 or No. 2 Diesel fuel in a no taxed status. It is intended for use in ag, thus the tax break. If an over the road truck or pick up is caught using the dyed fuel, then there can be fines or penalties for such use. Now the interesting part for me is ever since jan. 1 2007, the new fuel requirements are 15 PPM of sulfer or less for Diesel fuel. All of our local pumps have the same yellow sticker on the pumps indicating that it meets the 15 PPM requirment. So, given this situation, what is the difference between No. 1 and No. 2 now a days? I am guessing that it has something to do with the content or quantity of parafin wax in the fuel.

Thats the hard part. The red dye particles are less than 2 micron. So a typical secondary fuel filter will not even remove it. Thats the point, you should not be able to remove it. Its dyed in order to make sure it is being used for the pursose in which it was intended.

It will be for off road use. Just waiting for the right time. I am guessing that heating oil will be coming down too...sl

don't put red diesel in any licensed rig. If there is enough left in the tank to mix 1:1000 when you shift back to road diesel, it will turn the road diesel red! OK, I guess, if you don't get caught. If you get caught, you may, or may not, be able to defend yourself on the basis of fuel receipts. It's pretty chancy here in Oregon.

Hello all, I have often wondered in the back of my beedy little mind if the "Harvard" filter would get the red dye out? I remmember hear how good the filters were. Not that I would ever think of doing anything like that. Jim

The new caterpillar engines, which have five fuel filters, which clean down to 2 micron still allow the fuel to be red. I doubt any fuel filter could remove the dye- as intended!

I was told once that you can remove the dye by filtering the fuel through "fullers earth" or cat litter.( unused of course)

Letting it sit in a glass jar exposed to the sun for a few days will also break down the red dye.

How you would find a 50 gallon mason jar is beyond me, but...
