How do I remove the covers on the front idler oil fill, the track rollers / carrier does it screw off or pry off I don’t want to force it until I know what direction to take it. What method works best for filling the rollers with oil?

I don,t quite follow you but to fill them they have a plug that screws in each one and it has to be removed and Cat sells an adapter to screw in to pump oil in them. There might be other places that sell the adapter but not sure.

hello grayrat, you didn't say which model cat? you need info for ,but from your other post i see you have a rd4 ,
the rd4 have button head grease nipples that take 00 grease ,cat use a bucket pump to fill them ,or you can unscrew them to pump oil in ,them refit the nipple ,you still can buy a adapter that fits to a new style grease gun, this style can be fitted to a oil pump to fill the rollers ,the pic below show button head nipples ,bruce oz

Sorry about leaving out the little detail about what model sometime I get way ahead of myself. I pulled the nipple out and it looks like there was 00 grease inside. The manual said use transmission oil in the rollers and carriers and 00 in the track frame outer bearings. I was not sure if the button head came off the nipple to expose a zerk type fitting underneath. It would have made refilling easer. As there is 00 in the rollers and carriers would it be better to just refill with fresh 00 or tear them apart clean and fill with 90w oil? How do you know when the roller is full i don't want to blow out a seal by over filling.

You can use OO/AO grease in rollers and Idlers it shouldn't be a problem, and if those are like the bellows type seals on the later tractors you will get to a hard spot after a few pumps of grease that tells you the seal is full, if you don't hit a hard spot the seal is blown out, do you want to tear it down and repair it, no, just keep grease in them, we've run a 5J for the last 20 years with a couple blown roller seals and just keep them greased with not problems.

Technically its composition is a little different than the 00 (consistency is the same) but the cornhead grease sticks to anything it comes in contact with and that is important on a roller. I have used it only because my neighbor had a bucket of the stuff he was going to throw out and it worked fine. The cornhead grease is much, much better than trying to use regular gun grease.
